Today, Mexican, Antonio Margarito was declined in his most recent bid to regain his professional boxing license.
This move comes as a surprise to some, but insiders have felt for quite some time that Margarito’s inability to personally accept responsibility, and his limited display of remorse could ultimately be his undoing. For those who felt that way, perhaps their sentiments could not have been closer to the truth, as the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) appeared to agree on all counts.
For Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, suddenly, the plot thickens. Within the last 24hours Arum has stated publicly that Margarito “will be licensed in Texas”, as if it were a mere formality.
TOUGH TASK AHEAD….
This ruling will undoubtedly make that nearly impossible, as rarely in the sport will you see one jurisdiction act against the will of the initiating one in a case of this magnitude.
At last notice, the possibility of this fight happening overseas was said to be a no-go. With both Texas and Las Vegas expected to parallel the response of California, there’s no question Arum’s options stand very slim.
Not only is the venue a major challenge for Arum, but considering the promotional efforts necessary to stage such an event, logic tells us that Arum may have to do something he said he wouldn’t. With few truly credible opponents available, and only one with the ability to equal Pacquiao’s star-power, perhaps it’s time to tap on the shoulder of the man most love to hate……
ENTER FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR (AND DON KING)
In a recent interview conducted over at fightchronicles.com with John Martinez, uncle/trainer Roger Mayweather stated that he expects Floyd to fight before the end of the year, and made no secret that the fight he wants is one with Manny Pacquiao.
There were many things Roger Mayweather discussed over the course of the interview, but the one which held the most weight was the acknowledgment that the primary reason for the failed attempt rested squarely on the fact that contrary to popular belief, Manny Pacquiao had still refused to agree to full-scale randomized testing throughout fight camp.
As of now, Floyd Mayweather jr. remains a free agent, and Don King has made it clear that a single stroke of the pen – agreeing to a promotional deal in principle – would open the door for him to make the fight that the world has been waiting to see.
Goldenboy Promotions, Bob Arum, and Team Mayweather have all failed in their bid to get Manny Pacquiao to accept full-scale randomized testing, yet Don King says he has the remedy.
Despite the reputation around the industry that precedes him, with the Margarito fight looking to be in serious jeopardy, perhaps it’s time someone listen to the ‘old man’!
