Long Island’s own snack-king celebrity, Morrie Yohai, creator of the original cheez-a-licious Cheez Doodle, passed of cancer, July 27, 2010.
A lifelong New Yorker and resident of Kings Point, Great Neck, Mr. Yohai had kept a picture of Julia Child eating his burst-of-genious creations of puffy, orange snacks as a reminder to himself that even foodies can partake in the delicious addiction of his sinfully tasty snack food.
Oh, the simple pleasure of opening a bag of Wise Cheez Doodles taking in that initial wafting aroma of cheese noting the smells which are so opulent, rich and delicious. Next, you wedge the airy puffs between your thumb and index finger ever so gingerly only to have yourself marked as a snacker for several hours by the bright orange stains you wear with pride on your tongue, lips and fingers. You’ve become caught in your snack act!
Thank you, Mr. Yohai for creating a snack category that has transformed many 1960’s era childhoods into a 3 variety snack-bag decision: potato chips, pretzels or Doodles. Doodle lovers can be singled out and are a special breed like Mr. Yohai, who was interestingly enough, fond of the mystical.
Like the “mystical”, Doodles are magical wisps and punches of cheese flavor that almost disappear while melting in your mouth. At the Long Island Grocery Headquarters we think at their very essence, Doodles are still unique to the snack world today…and so are their snack lovers: independent, cutting edge and adventurous.
Baked, not fried snack foods, are very much in the norm today, however, back in the day, baked snacks were hardly what one would find on your Long Island supermarket shelf. Mr. Yohai, was a forward thinker who carved a healthier path and today we have snacks such as popchips which capture the Doodle’s spirit and Mr. Yohai’s sensibility.
