On Saturday, August 21, the San Diego County Library will present a Literary Festival in Julian. The event, complete with two presentations, one by a literary agent, the other by an author, will include entertainment by local favorites, Jake’s Mountain.
The event begins at 10:30 a.m. when Taylor Martindale, a literary agent with the Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency, presents “How to get your book published and the role of a literary agent.” Martindale says her presentation will cover “the basics of querying, useful resources for authors, the agent-author relationship and how to approach platform.” She said she is “thrilled to be taking part” and is looking forward to addressing specific questions attendees may have.
At 1:00 p.m., the keynote speaker will be Sue Ann Jaffarian a Los Angeles paralegal, author, and motivational speaker. Jaffarian says she’ll wear her author hat for her presentation because she expects mostly readers at the Festival. She’ll speak about her mystery novel, Ghost ala Mode, a mystery located in Julian. But, she added, “We’re not sure exactly who will attend so I’ll be very flexible.” Jaffarian, known for her special brand of humor, is bound to be entertaining no matter which hat she wears.
There’s even a bonus for the day. Jaffarian’s newest book will be “unofficially” launched at the Festival—well in advance of the official launch date of September 1. Murder in Vein, a vampire mystery, kicks off Jaffarian’s third mystery series and will be available for sale and signing. Because Jaffarian is writing three concurrent series, she’s frequently asked how she keeps all those different characters straignt. Her response is a simple, “When a vampire takes a bite out of Odelia Gray’s neck, I’m in trouble.”
Colleen Baker, Julian Branch Manager, said, “The library has become the major meeting and event place for this community. I’m happy we’re able to bring an event like this to a community with so many aspiring authors.”
The entertainment begins at 3:00 p.m. with Jake’s Mountain, a duo who sing tales of love, family, and the simple mountain life. Registration is free and refreshments will be served. The event will be held at the Julian Branch Library, 1850 Hwy. 78, Julian.
