News & Commentary from the liberterrain…
Published on the Texas Secretary of State’s website as part of Project VOTE is a “lesson” for teaching kids about our electoral system titled “Roles of Political Parties” (pdf).
One lesson explains how a “two-party system” is best for democracy since it will always produce majority rule while politically unstable “multi-party systems” give us France with its “sad story” of shaky and short-lived coalition governments.
In short, third parties are bad.
But this is actually a great opportunity for Libertarians. It’s time to drop the third party effort with the Libertarian Party and get with the officially sanctioned government program and fully embrace the venerated two-party system.
(Anarcho-libertarians please stand by; the following is primarily for capital L partyarch Libertarians.)
Let’s split the LP into two new mainstream parties, the Conservative Libertarian Party (CLP) and the Liberal Libertarian Party (LLP).
The RLP will focus on advancing economic freedom based on libertarian principles. High on its agenda will be a demand for complete separation of government and economy, thereby ending elitist protectionist corporatist welfarism and enabling a true laissez-faire free market system.
Once the RLP gains control of government it can argue over whether to implement Misesian, Hayekian, Friedmanian, Bastiatian or whatever libertarian economic principles.
The LLP will concentrate on civil rights issues by eradicating all victimless crime laws and packing the Supreme Court with Libertarian Constitutionalists who will premise their decisions on the question, “Will my decision result in more individual freedom and/or a more limited government? If yes, vote for it.”
Once the LLP gains control of government it can argue over (here’s your consulting opportunity, Anarchos) the best way to whittle the state down to zero, turn out the lights, and go home.
When people say they believe in the two-party system Libertarians can tell them, “We offer you a two-party system. You can vote for either with the confidence that neither your rights nor your money will be stolen from you by government.”
And both parties can complain that the Republicans and Democrats are stealing votes from them.
And BTW, there already is a second Libertarian Party. It’s called the Boston Tea Party and it was founded before the spate of “Tea Party” uprisings uprose around the country and stole most of the former’s name.
Acquaint yourself with the Boston Tea Party.
