Many times people say they wish they were single when they start getting restless in a relationship. Yet those same people want to find someone special when they find themselves single again. It’s the never ending result of staring at someone else’s green grass. Sure, most of us want to be in a healthy, happy relationship. But if you are single, learn to celebrate your independence rather than marinating in self-pity.
Instead of focusing on what you do not have it is important to make sure that you are making the most of the situation. Celebrate the season that you are in, no matter what that looks like for you. And for gawd sake, if you are single and I have to sit next to you at a wedding for example, please don’t splash your “poor me” attitude onto me and my cake. Of course you want to be a bride. Of course you want to wear a dress and say “I do.” But today is not your day, it’s hers. So celebrate her and celebrate him. And try to remember that you won’t get back today. So rather than being a grump-ass because someone else is walking down the aisle and has something you want, stop being a kill-joy and realize that you have something they’ll never have again: Freedom.
Use this time of being single to perfect the things in your life you’ve always wanted to improve upon or learn something you’ve always wanted to learn. There is so much you can enjoy when you’re single that being in a committed relationship or marriage would not allow the time for. Learn to play the guitar, or paint. Get a new hobby, or perfect your ability to sew or bake. Scuba dive, rock climb or take to the driving range. Just get outside the house and outside your mind so you don’t feel sorry for yourself because there is nothing more unattractive than a pity party. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll meet that special person while you’re investing time and energy into the things in life that you already really enjoy doing. In the end, just make sure you are celebrating the season that you are in and celebrating this time you have alone. Let freedom ring, single people!
No matter what, please don’t drip your depression on someone else’s wedding cake!
