The City of
Massillon has done itself proud. The Legends has become a legend in its own time. Not far off of State Rt, 21, there are 27 holes of rolling hills, ponds, creeks, bunkers, mounds and trees, make this the full package of a golf course. Once an 18 hole course, The Legends, expanded splitting 6 holes groups from the original 18 and adding 3 holes per group to create the 27 holes. The South and East courses are considered the “Championship” layout and will be covered here.
The wide fairways and huge greens are immaculate, firm fast and difficult to read. The Legends has some of the best conditioned turf you will find at a public golf course. The rough is not deep or thick, flier lies are common and you can usually get out of it without problems. The only detraction is the bunkers many of which need sand, on a property this big that is understandable, and the course needs some bridge work, the former makes the course tougher, the latter is just a financial hardship. Overall this is a beautiful piece of golf property.

I#4 East Course
The Championship layout plays at a little over 6800 yards long and they have 4 sets of tees for you to choose from. Even at that length the course does not play overly long. It is better to think your way around the Legends than to try to over power it. The first hole #1 South, is a dogleg left with a creek that crosses the fairway, longer hitters may be able to clear the creek but the better play is a layup still leaving only a short iron in. The third hole on this nine is a long par 5, stay left, way left off the tee, the bunker on the right is death, and taxes both.
The scorecard has excellent hole maps with yardages to help you plan your strategy, take advantage of this, again you will be planning on laying up off of several tees, position is key here. The only problem is in making this a 27 hole course, the South nine and the West nine end and start respectively a long way from the clubhouse, walking is allowed at all times, and other than these two holes is not a bad walk at all. You know what they say, golf is a good walk spoiled, well the golf is good, the walks are excellent so in the case of The Legends the saying is all wrong.
#9 East Course
Much of the huge clubhouse is dedicated to banquet business. The pro shop is luxurious and has all the apparel, balls gloves and shoes you may need, but they do not carry clubs. The 19th hole is nice and snug, but they also have a very nice patio for your post round libations. And the burger dog, with a little
Tabasco is heaven. The range is suitable, on par with most public course, but they have a great short game area, with a huge undulating green and several bunkers,
At between an hour to an hour and a half from the Cleveland golf scene, this may seem like a long way to go, but no more so than crossing
CuyahogaCounty from West to East or visa versa to play. And the lower cost green fees found in “the South” easily offsets any extra gas it may take. The Legends is a wonderful value and truly one of the more beautiful and challenging courses in the area.
You would be “crazy” not to add the Legends to your golf trek.
