The following steps will walk you through a career checkup:
1.Assess your skills
2.Identify and rate your values
3.Identify your interests
4.Determine if your current career utilizes your skills, validates your values, fulfills your interests,
if yes, move to step 9, if no, which area is lacking? Is it time for a new career? If so, go to step
5.Determine the overlap of these three areas to identify career options
7.Conduct needed research regarding training, forecasts, typical responsibilities
8.Select optimal option based on findings
9.Determine further training needed to move forward in your selected area of focus for the
10.Develop an action plan
If you are not familiar with how to assess your skills, values and interest you may wish to refer to the
famous Career Guide by Richard Bolles “What Color is Your Parachute?” In addition, Bolles’ book
contains a listing of career counselors and coaches to assist you in this journey.
A career counselor/coach can be very valuable during this period of transition and help you determine the best career options for you to pursue as well as assist you with preparing a resume and practicing how to interview.
