While the media reacts to House Minority Leader, John Boehner’s (R-OH) “killing an ant with a nuclear weapon,” view of the financial regulatory reform bill which passed in the House yesterday, other statements in his Pittsburgh Tribune-Review interview have been relatively glossed over. One such statement is his view of Social Security.
In his usual non-thinking style, John Boehner, the man who would be the Speaker of the House of Representatives if the Republican’s won enough seats in November to regain the majority, decided that all Americans around 47-years-old and younger should wait until age they are 70 to be eligible for retirement and that people who don’t need payments from Social Security shouldn’t get them
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Boehner said he’d favor increasing the Social Security retirement age to 70 for people who have at least 20 years until retirement, tying cost-of-living increases to the consumer price index rather than wage inflation, and limiting payments to those who need them.
CNN Political Ticker: Boehner also suggested raising the social security retirement age to 70 for those who have at least 20 years left before retirement as a possible way to finance the ongoing wars
“We need to look at the American people and explain to them that we’re broke,” he said. “If you have substantial non-Social Security income while you’re retired, why are we paying you at a time when we’re broke? We just need to be honest with people.”
So in order to finance a losing strategy in Afghanistan that keeps the Cheney-Hawks happy, today’s young and middle-aged workers should work an extra three years. That’s something you’d expect from a current day GOP obstructionist such as John Boehner. That’s something we’re used to from John Boehner.
But the most shocking part of his statement is the most un-Republican statement uttered in recent memory, and by the party’s leader in the House of all people. John Boehner wants to suspend all Social Security payments to anyone having a “substantial non-social security income,” despite the fact that those people were taxed to receive those payments.
John Boehner, through Social Security overhaul, to pay for unending engagement in war, is proposing the highest tax increase on the rich ever proposed. John Boehner’s deny-the-rich Social Security is a higher off-the-top tax increase on wealthy individuals than any liberal has ever had the political courage to propose. It would be by far the largest government takeover of American personal wealth and personal income in our history. It is just so…liberal?
With his own mouth, John Boehner continues to “campaign” by alienating large groups of conservative constituents, young people, anti-tax frenzied Tea Partiers, and now, all well-to-do and rich old people. John Boehner’s political prospects as a future liberal Democrat look great.
