While A New York City panel voted unanimously Tuesday to reject landmark status for a building near the World Trade Center site (It’s been 9 years! Why is this still just a site and not a building or group of buildings? Why don’t we just call it what it is: A giant hole in the ground still held up by incessant bureaucracy?), paving the way for construction of a mosque and an Islamic community center, Suffolk County officials continued spraying select areas this week as a part of continuing efforts to control mosquitoes that carry West Nile Virus. How are they related? This blogger wants to know. (Yes, I often speak of myself in the third person, sounds more impressive that way.)
Thank you Fox News, you paragon of truth and virtue: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/08/03/new-york-city-panel-clears-way-mosque-ground-zero/
The Department of Public Works will be spraying in parts of the North Shore and Fire Island. Vector Control workers will treat Greenlawn and Selden with the pesticide known as Scourge (Uh, do we really want to disperse something called “Scourge” all around our towns? Could we at least play on ignorance and call it “Super Magical Happy Dust” or something?) from 8 p.m. through 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Workers will use the pesticide known as Anvil (At least this one sounds slightly less threatening.) in Davis Park and Point O’Woods on Fire Island from 6:30 p.m. through 10:30 p.m.
Smith Point Park will be sprayed Wednesday between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.
Authorities said that for current and future notices and/or further information, contact Suffolk County Division of Vector Control at 631-852-4270, the Spraying Information Hotline (Wouldn’t you love to be the operator on this one?) 631-852-4939 or go to www.suffolkcountyny.gov/health, then click on Mosquito Spraying (Just be careful when you click on spraying it does not shoot Pesticides directly into your eyes from your speakers).
And what exactly are West Nile Mosquitoes and how did they get to Suffolk County, New York? If President Obama and those pinko socialist Nazi democrats would have just secured our borders in the first place from these little devils then maybe we wouldn’t have had to spray these pesticides all over our yards. Can you say “Cancer” everyone?
My apologies, I was suddenly possessed by Andrew Breitbart. On another note, I am no longer able to say the name “Breitbart” without doing it in a Beavis type voice. I don’t know why.
“Are you threatening me? I am the great Breitbart Cornholio! I need TP for my bungholio! And why is toilet paper always white? Is that some sort of bungholio reverse racism?”
Sorry, I’ll stop. I sometimes get a little carried away.
Perhaps this video will help explain, or just confuse you all the more: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yW_sIKBfIk
So, what exactly is West Nile Virus?
The CDC reports that Mosquitoes spreading West Nile virus can cause serious, life-altering (Life altering? Does that mean it can turn you gay or convert to Buddhism?), and even fatal disease. When dealing with West Nile virus, prevention is your best bet. Fighting mosquito bites reduces your risk of getting this disease, along with others that mosquitoes can carry. Take the commonsense steps below to reduce your risk:
• avoid bites and illness
• clean out the mosquitoes from the places where you work and play
• wear a condom (Oops, sorry. That’s how to avoid AIDS.)
• help your community control the disease.
Okay, but none of that actually says what the virus is. Can you help me CDC (“Help me CDC, help me! You’re my only hope!” My apologies regarding my poor Princess Leia impression.)
(“I’m sorry, I don’t do impressions. My expertise is in psychiatry”. Now, I jumped to Airplane II, sorry again. I am rolling!)
What Is West Nile Virus?
West Nile virus (WNV) is a potentially serious illness. Experts believe WNV is established as a seasonal epidemic in North America that flares up in the summer and continues into the fall.
Okay, I give up CDC. Let’s just all agree that West Nile Virus is a vague and mysterious illness very bad for children, the elderly and all good hearted, red blooded Americans. Let’s also assume since it is “West Nile”, it comes to us straight from Egypt. Egypt, as you may know is in the Middle East and a largely Muslim country (Though ruled by autocrat Hosni Mubarak who took over after Anwar Sadat was assassinated back in 1981 for making peace with Israel. See! We’re learning today!)
Ah, Wikipedia. Is there anything you do not know? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosni_Mubarak
Since we are trekking down this path of suspicious ignorance, let’s also assume that West Nile Virus from the Middle East is therefore a Muslim disease created by deranged Al Qaeda scientists who took mutant monkeys, infected them with radioactive isotopes from crazed gerbils to cause the downfall of the Untied States of America!!!! See? The pieces have all fallen into place! We have proven it! Take that Al Qaeda!! You’re not building a Mosque anywhere near where the World Trade Center used to stand!!!
Sorry. Let’s get back to the WTC Mosque controversy.
Opponents of the project, including 9/11 first-responders and family members of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, have said the location would be insensitive. (I’m pretty sure they said something stronger than that!)
The mosque is slated to be part of an Islamic community center to be operated by a group called the Cordoba Initiative ( Sounds like a Chess move. “I will counter your Cordoba Initiative with my Sicilian Defense.” If any of you Clive Cussler fans get that last reference I will be very impressed.), which says the center will be a space for moderate Muslim voices. (Isn’t that a contradiction in terms?)
Critics of the mosque attended Tuesday’s meeting of the city Landmarks Preservation Commission (“Are you down with LPC? Yeah, you know me!” Sorry, big time old school Naughty By Nature fan.), which voted 9-0 against granting landmark status to the site’s 152-year-old building, which can now be torn down to make way for the Islamic center.
The commission was asked to determine whether the building is architecturally important enough to preserve (What does that even mean?), not to consider the merits of the proposed mosque. Demolition and construction of the mosque can now proceed by Mario and Luigi Plumbing and Construction Corp.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg supported the mosque’s construction, but the project had drawn opposition from former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and the Aryan Revolutionary Front, among others.
What no one had seemed to notice or bother with was the fact that the building already had a functioning Mosque within it’s walls. Therefore, they were protesting the new construction of something that was already there.
Reached for comment, “Dandy” Andy Breitbart replied with, “Are you threatening me?!?!?”
