The entrepreneur of the day is my good friend, Jason Munson, who built a 6-figure eBay business in just a few short years. Jason lives near Sacramento, CA and will share his amazing story of successes and failures, along with advice on how to build your own successful eBay business. As you can tell by his photo, Jason knows how to apply fun to his work, and still be successful! He also proves that you don’t always need a college degree to be business savvy.
Q: Jason, tell me about yourself and how you got started running an eBay business.
A: I grew up in a small town in California and although I finished High School I had very poor grades and no desire to go to college. Within a few years I ended up exactly as you would expect; working in the job that offered me the most money, doing something that I could tolerate but didn’t love. I worked as a hot tub repair technician and gas fireplace technician for the next ten years. During that time I become curious about eBay and started selling some of the parts I used in my repair business. Eventually my online business grew, I quit my job in 2008 and put all of my focus on my eBay business which really took off.
Quitting my job was a huge step forward. I’ve often joked with my friends that “I’m too dumb to be scared.” I had become so disgusted and angry with myself for this worthless career I was giving my life away to and those feelings overcame any fear I had about leaving my job. Anger, rage, and hate are not positive emotions but the energy they provide is good fuel for starting anything new and they kept me from going back.
During this transition some other opportunities came up and I let my eBay business go. Those successes were short lived so after a few months of my eBay business being inactive, I lit the fires up and really went for it. I started to list anything I could get a regular supply of not knowing what would sell and what wouldn’t. Some items didn’t sell at all but there were a few that sold like crazy. That’s when I started to make money.
What sets me apart from my competitors and what I teach others to do at www.easyebay.us is to be a real person. Most business owners are afraid to tell you who they are and don’t want you to have any contact information you could reach them at. I apply the exact opposite approach; brand yourself as an expert in your industry and make it easy for people to contact you. This builds incredibly high customer loyalty and the customers view you like a next door neighbor they can always trust and rely on. They will pay you more and pick you more often over the competition.
Q: What led you to starting this particular business?
A: Have you ever had the feeling that ‘this is not what you are supose to be doing’ but you don’t know what you should be doing? That’s how I felt back in 2007. EBay was just a hobby that made extra money for me back then. I didn’t have a clue it was where I should be putting my focus at. I only knew that I was wasting my talent and life driving around Utah fixing hot tubs. Eventually I had a moment of sanity and quit my job which forced me to start looking into other opportunities. I had to become much more creative in way to produce income but I wasn’t using eBay to the fullest extent. When the recession hit in 2008 everything dried up and I turned to selling full time on eBay out of despairation. In my first month I sold $14,000.00 worth of stuff!
Q: What’s most rewarding about owning your business?
A: In the short term the most rewarding moments are opening my email inbox and seeing all the money I made while I was sleeping. In the long term I have the satisfaction of knowing that I heat peoples homes. During the winter what I do and how fast I do it makes a huge difference. If I were to wait a day or two to ship a part out my customers would be that much longer without heat. Many of my customers are trying to save money by fixing things themselves so I provide FREE techical support to anyone who buys a part from me. It feels fantastic to assist someone with keeping their family warm.
Q: You are launching a product that teaches people how to start an eBay business. Tell me more about that.
A: I heard a statistic that the average home foreclosure is due to the household being short only $800 a month. A lot of the time it’s just a little money that makes a big difference. I knew I could help and couldn’t live with myself not doing anything about it so I created www.easyebay.us as a solution to people’s need for cash and what I believe could be a solution for the reccession. Most people don’t realize that they have $2000-3000 of items around their house that they don’t use and could sell on eBay. I created www.easyebay.us to teach beginners how to sell those items on eBay.
EBay has been a life saver for my finances and what I learned can help people start making money in a few days. At www.easyebay.us I share the tips and tools that I spent thousands of hours and dollars to learn and so far I haven’t been able to find anyone else that will show you this stuff.
Q: What do you recommend people do who are thinking of starting an eBay business. And can they do it on the side, while having a full-time job?
A: Run away from anyone telling you “you can get rich selling on eBay.” There are a small percentage of people who are making a lot of money on eBay and most people who sell on eBay are not rich. Do not fall for any “get rich on eBay” programs. Do not pay for an expensive program or buy an expensive inventory of items right away! Be patient. You need to put some work into it and gain some experience.
If you are thinking of starting an eBay business start by selling items around your home you don’t use or need. If you experience some success look for ways to build it bigger a little bit at a time. Find a category of item that you know really well and can sell over and over again. I have a “FREE Videos” link on my website that covers these very subjects. Market yourself as an expert in that area. People buy from people who say they are “Experts.”
At www.easyebay.us I’ve worked very hard to speed up your learning curve and provide as much value as possible and I’m not even close to being done. As I learn and think of new strategies or find items you can sell, I post updates so there is a continual stream of new and valuable content. Beyond this I have a “Make It Back or Give It Back” policy that states “if you do not make back the money you spent on the program in 30 days from what you sell on eBay I will refund your money.”
If you were to start selling on eBay today using my program you could expect to make some money by the end of the week. Within a month you would see how much time and money you save by having access to my content. The hardest steps in starting a new business is very simply “Getting Started.” One of the most important moments in a business is making the first few sales. www.EasyEbay.us shows you how to do this right away.
