Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore West Beach offers a great view of the Chicago skyline. Visitors come in droves to Chicago to see its spectacular skyline and many of these visitors flock to areas like Grant Park and areas along Lake Michigan to view one of the best skylines in the world.
Often times the best place to view a beautiful place is from far away. One of the best views of the Great Smoky Mountains is from a place called the Hangover in the nearby Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. The same holds true for the Chicago skyline and a great place to view the iconic set of buildings is across the lake just east of Gary, Indiana at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
At the junction of County Line Road and U.S. Route 12 lies the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore West Beach. Entry for the day is $6.00 and for the view, the swimming, and the hiking the fee is well worth it. Directions from Chicago below:

After the fee station, park at the end of the road and continue towards the bath house. There are two places that afford great views of the lake and on clear days the Chicago skyline. Hike the Dunes Succession Trail Loop, which climbs a staircase straight up one of the higher dunes. Keep in mind that good visibility is necessary to see the skyline and is not a guarantee.
There is also a sand trail that climbs up a dune just west of the bath house. At the building to the left of the bath house in front are handicapped parking signs. Just beyond these signs is a sand trail that climbs a set of dunes that overlook the beach and the lake. Both spots are worth the short steep climb.
The West Beach also has a Long Lake Loop trail, which is a beautiful marsh full of great blue herons and other birds. Deer are plentiful in the inland prairie between the marsh and the beach especially at dawn and dusk. With so much to do and see, the $6.00 fee to enter the West Beach is an adventure bargain.
