Dawgs on Pelham is a place that could be featured on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. It’s an old grocery store converted into a hot dog and hamburger joint. It’s locally owned by Rick and Tawana Porter, and it is GOOD! The food is simple and unpretentious. The Porters have not reinvented the wheel, they just perfected it. They are open Monday and Tuesday 11:00am-4:00pm, Wednesday-Friday 11:00am-8:00pm and Saturday 11:00am-3:00pm. Their phone number is 864-297-6000, and the address is 2100 Pelham Road, Greenville, SC 29615.
The choices are hot dogs (and all beef hot dogs), corn dogs and brats in some form or another; hamburgers and iterations of burgers; grilled cheese or chicken; BLT; hamburger steak; Philly steak; Philly chicken; Calabash chicken tenders; garden salad; grilled chicken salad; fries; onion rings; and drinks. With the simplicity of the menu out of the way, the food is better than good. The sign on the front of the counter tells you that you should be prepared to wait a few minutes, because when you order it, they begin to prepare it. It is worth the ten to fifteen minute wait. The meat is never frozen, and deliciously juicy. The Stuff Burger is two thin patties of meat with onions and cheese in between. The meat is sealed around the onion and cheese so the onions steam within the meat in their own juices. The result is the sweetest, juiciest, messiest burger you ever tasted. The french fries are fresh made in the Dawg House and are crispy and delicious.
The burgers at this hot dog joint have been recognized as the best in Greenville. They are the best around without a doubt. The hot dogs and chili are fantastic. Once an order is placed, the food is brought to your table. The drinks are self service, and there are plenty of napkins at the table. The Stuff Burger is a ten napkin minimum. The owner, as well as other employees, check on the diners and ask that tedious question, “Is everything good?” The answer that echoes through the simple rustic surroundings is that everything is great.
The prices are reasonable for the quality and quantity of food in each order. The price for a cheeseburger plate is $7.30 which includes fries and purple cabbage slaw. A hot dawg with mustard and chili is $1.85, and the hot dawg plate is $4.70.
