This past Friday, youth intern Mariesa Rizzo shared an emotional message with the teens of Refuge Youth Ministries encouraging them never to give up when they want something, insisting that, if you want something bad enough, no matter how difficult the road may be, you will achieve what you strive for.
She began by sharing her personal experience of struggling to meet the financial obligations of college throughout five and a half years at Valley Forge Christian College. Each year she began to panic, unsure of whether she would be able to return for her next semester at college. But each time the crisis came, God provided her a way through it. The coming semester marks her 11th and final semester at college, and with God’s grace she will see it through to graduation.
Mariesa compared her story to that of David who slew Goliath. He also came upon his fair share of obstacles before he was able to achieve his goal. First, his brother rebuked him for discussing the matter of slaying the giant. King Saul told David that, surely, he was far too meek to be able to compete with a seasoned warrior, especially a giant. The giant Goliath himself mocked David, who came into battle only with some rocks, a sling, and a staff, while he himself was equipped with armor and fierce weaponry.
And yet, despite all these giant obstacles that David faced, including the intimidating Goliath himself, with God’s help and in His name, David slew the mighty Philistine. David didn’t face his challenge with an attitude of unworthiness. He didn’t write it off as a loss before it happened, as we tend to do sometimes. In sports, we frequently believe we have a good handle on who we think will win a competition.
But David heard the mockery and disbelief and cast it aside, believing in himself and the power and grace of his God to help him achieve greatness in His name. And while the rest of the Israelites were shaking in their armor, David was the one to step up, take the challenge, and win.
Have you ever come across an obstacle and written it off as a loss? Believed something futile before you began it?
If you want something bad enough, don’t ever let someone tell you that you aren’t good enough to achieve something. Don’t ever let anything stand in your way. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it, and don’t give up until you cannot take another step. You will be surprised how far you get when you just believe.
