Anyone that has been out to hear the blues in Kansas City has seen first hand how much talent we have here in this city. Besides talent, there is something else that people should know about the blues musicians. They have heart. Being a musician isn’t always a road to riches. There are a lot of gigs for little pay, especially when you play the blues. A reason other than money, though, keeps all those musicians playing the blues, and it comes down to heart. They play because they love the music. Beyond their love for music and the blues, they have a heart for helping others. Blues musicians in Kansas City are always willing to donate their time for a good cause and to help others. They use their talent to help raise money for good causes year round at various benefits such as the annual SIDS, Hope House and Sherwood benefits. On August 8th, seven blues bands are donating their time to collect money and food to help feed people. The benefit is Harvest the Blues and is being held at BB’s Lawnside BBQ.
The combination of blues and BBQ is a tradition that goes way back. They go together perfectly, and it’s served up at BB’s six days a week by owners Lindsay and Jo Shannon. The menu at BB’s includes BBQ meatloaf, the BBQ sundae, and Louisiana favorites. Then, of course, there are the ribs that are smoked slow and easy over a hickory wood fire in a pit that is over 50 years old. While your hands are busy handling the ribs, the bands that play at BB’s will keep your feet tapping. Sunday, August 8, 2010 from 12-7pm you can enjoy BBQ and blues while donating to a good cause. Proprietors Lindsay and Jo Shannon have been generously hosting benefits at BB’s since they opened, and generally there is only a small cover charge collected at BB’s to hear the bands perform. There will still be a cover charge to get into to Harvest the Blues, but the money (or non-perishable items) collected at the door will be donated to the Salvation Army. To make the deal sweeter you will get to hear not one but seven blues bands during the benefit! Again, all of the bands performing at Harvest the Blues are donating their time.
Now I would like to take the chance to say thank you! Thank you to all you hard working musicians that continue to donate your time to help others. There are some bands in particular (you know who you are) that have gone above and beyond with giving their time and really deserve a big thank you. So here it goes… THANK YOU!
