A reader wrote in asking for advice. ‘Al’ said, “My computer just got hacked. I lost access to my Yahoo IM, email and Perfect World accounts. The guy has been sending messages through Remote Access chat telling me he’s been through my computer. He wants my secret question and answer for my game accounts and said he would give my email account back if I gave him the information. He said he used something called a ‘fudrat’ to get into my computer. How do I get my accounts back?”
Most gamers consider hackers to be the lowest of the low. Whether solo or in groups, hackers use exploits to maliciously attack websites and personal computers, perusing through personal information in attempts to take over sensitive accounts. The hacking of YouTube on July 4 is the most recent example.
The FUDRAT referred to is an acronym for Fully UnDetectable Remote Access Tool. “Fully UnDetectable” describes the difficulty for antivirus programs to detect it once it enters the computer system. Once activated in the computer, the “RAT” enables a hacker to remotely access and control other people’s computer. It can serve a variety of malicious purposes, including hijacking and transferring private information, downloading files, running programs, and tampering with system settings.
Fortunately for Al, online games such as Perfect World have had experience dealing with compromised accounts. Their Knowledge Base gives direct steps to take to help recover the account. Their forums will likely have posts of any recent attacks and assistance with account recovery.
Yahoo will assist the victim with regaining their account. This page provides contact information to notify them about the issue. They will return the inquiry asking for the needed to resolve the issue.
Be suspicious of any addons, updates or programs that do not come directly from the official gamesite, as there is a chance they may contain a program which will give a hacker access to your machine. Hacking Alert posted a helpful list about a gamer’s likeliness of being a victim of a hacker. Keep aware of reports of other gamers getting attacked by hackers.
Every computer should be as protected to detect and remove malicious software. Keep your antivirus program updated and use a strong anti-spyware program to detect anything that may already be on the system. Highly recommended are Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware Free and Safer Networking’s Spybot Search and Destroy. Make sure that your system is as protected as possible to help minimize the risk of being hacked.
