I will be direct. I do not want a mosque existing two blocks from Ground Zero.
But there are problems with how I feel.
As President Obama has indicated, everyone should know the First Amendment right to freedom of religion and speech, and the right to PEACEFULLY assemble to petition the government for a redress of grievances. These are the words our country lives by at all times, not just on select occasions.
Right there opposition to the mosque faces a roadblock. But let us go further.
Many will quote the Koran (Qur`an) as teaching, “Slay the idolaters wherever you find them……”. This most likely translates as including Christians. Not good for Christians.
Much of Muhammad’s original text has been abrogated (abolished) and replaced with violent teaching. Yet in the Koran his original words still exist beside the new.
It would seem “followers” choose to follow diverging paths, some towards peaceful coexistence and others towards the use of violence as a means to an end.
However, let us not forget the history of Christianity. Remember the “Christians” during the Crusades who, inspired by Pope Urban II, descended upon foreign lands, slaying Muslims in the name of Christendom.
Remember those “Christians” of today, who ardently oppose same-sex marriage, homosexuality, and abortion, even to the point of violence, in spite of the fact that Christ NEVER said a word to encourage casting out or hurting those involved.
At the Last Supper He but commanded, “Love one another as I have loved you.”
It was the later writings of Paul which “abrogated” Christ’s own words.
In regard to concerns that those in the Ground Zero mosque might be taught to hate America, we do have history.
“I Was a Communist for the FBI” , a popular McCarthy-era radio show, revealed how U.S. agents could and did infiltrate anti-American political groups within the country. Certainly we will “keep an eye” upon activities in that mosque, as well as others around the country.
Lastly, we must remember that a Muslim prayer house stood several blocks from Ground Zero back on November 11, 2001. No one, including the Muslim terrorists, could be certain that the Twin Towers would collapse just the way they did.
Collateral damage could very well have included this Muslim faciliity and those worshiping inside at the time.
The 9/11 Attack, though well planned, was not based truly upon religious teachings. Too many of their own were caused to suffer, as well as the many who were endangered.
As it turned out, many buildings were rendered uninhabitable many blocks from the collapsed towers. It was indeed a close call for the prayer house.
No, I am not a champion for the idea of a mosque being located near Ground Zero.
But I do believe both Christians and Muslims must do better at taking responsibility for and control of the radicals who are always present in any movement.
These “zealots” must be recognized as creatures who only act to serve themselves and their sick agendas in the guise of the religions they pretend to represent.
What a great “teachable moment” we are living right now!
Any social studies teacher…..or parent, should grasp at this opportunity to weigh the freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution against the shallow confines of the empty-souled terrorists committed to destruction and chaos.
