Produce and Back-to-school items head the sales at the grocery stores. The best place for back to school supplies is still the big box or loss leaders at the office supply stores. The meat departments seem to have the makings for fast dinners on sale too.
This week’s best sale is on Peaches. Sprouts, at 120th and Sheridan, has them 3 pounds for $1. This would make a 30 pound box only $10, better than any sale so far this year. This is the perfect price for canning and you can choose each piece of fruit rather than just take what is in the box. The only drawback is that they are not noted as Palisade Peaches. Your Arvada King Soopers has these for a dollar a pound, which is a good price for the Colorado grown beauties.
The weight of Cantaloupe seems to be about 3 pounds each. King Soopers is offering them to you for 3 pounds for $1 and Colorado Safeway Stores have them for $1 each. Sprouts is selling them for just 88 cent each this week.
Sprouts has Brussel sprouts, green beans, tomatoes, Italian or yellow squash, Gala apples and plums are all on sale for 88 cents a pound. Avocados, bell peppers and heads of loose leaf lettuce are all 88 cents each. Watermelon is 20 cents a pound this week too. While at Sprouts check out the 67 cents a pound special on chicken thighs and drumsticks.
Sunflower Markets at 77th and Wadsworth, have Gala apples for 57 cents a pound. These would be great to add to lunch boxes next week. Bell peppers, Olathe corn and cucumbers are 50 cents each and red potatoes or red onions are 50 cents a pound. A 5 pound bag of carrots is just 2 dollars. Avocados and celery are 88 cents each. Plums, broccoli and tomatoes are just 88 cents a pound. There are a number of specials in their meat department as well this week.
Safeway has 7-bone Chuck steak for $1.99 a pound. This one is great in the Crockpot all day on low with onion soup mix and 2 cups of water, add some sub rolls and cheese for an easy supper. Check out their ad for some great weekend specials and coupons.
King Soopers has Cook’s shank portion hams for 99 cents a pound. Ham steaks with corn on the cob at 4 for $1 are the start of a great fast dinner. Top it off with peach crunch cake on sale for $3.99 each. They also have specials on snack items to ad to lunch bags.
You can fill your pantry with the loss leaders to save money over all on your grocery bill. Some preparation to preserve the fresh produce will extend the life of summer’s goodness for your family’s enjoyment.
