The oldest and most experienced man in the history of the Senate will be replaced by the youngest man in the Senate with absolutely no political experience. 36-year-old Carte Goodwin will be sworn in on Tuesday in the West Virginia seat formerly occupied by recently deceased 92-year-old Robert C. Byrd. I believe that Robert C. Byrd who spent his life fighting for and protecting West Virginia would be ashamed of the choices Joe Manchin has made. It is clear that Goodwin is a close friend of Manchins and a Friend of coal.
Goodwins youth and lack of experience will make him the perfect puppet for Manchin. There hasnt even been an election yet and all ready Gov. Manchin has taken control of the Senate seat.
Goodwin is a former counsel to Democratic Governor Joe Manchin, who appointed Goodwin as a placeholder until he runs for the seat himself in a special election expected to be held in a few months.
So who is Carte Goodwin?
He is 36 years old and currently a practicing attorney in West Virginia. He served as Manchin’s general counsel from 2005-2009. He’s thought to be a trusted associate and friend of Manchin, and has known the governor since 2004, when Goodwin worked as a volunteer in his campaign. He’s currently a partner at his family’s law firm based in Charleston, appropriately named Goodwin & Goodwin.

Gov. Manchin knew exactly what he was doing when he chose Goodwill. The decision was not made with West Virginias best interest at heart, but instead in what was the best situation for Joe Manchin. Anne Barth knew Robert C. Byrds job like the back of her hand. She should be sitting in the Senate not Goodwin, but Anne is a strong willed woman and would not become merely a pawn for the governor.
By picking a close adviser Manchin clearly showed his hand about his plans to run for the Senate seat. We must find a candidate that will put West Virginia first, that candidate is not Joe Manchin.
