The sun’s aglow; shining down upon blossoming flowers and bountiful trees. Birds glide overhead as if they are racing a frivolous wind. Shy clouds- with their ‘soft-white’ glaze- add a surreal touch across ‘baby-blue’ skies. Yet- somehow- even in the midst of this ‘somewhere-over-the-rainbow’ view, something seems to be missing. Could it be the ‘human’ element?
Regarding the elegant dance of ‘life’, seems only the breath of human spirit can fulfill nature’s divine design. However, the mysterious glow of humanity cannot be thoroughly detected by the ‘clever’ radars of search engines; no sir! Neither will a beloved “Inspector Gadget” have an appropriate gadget for this dilemma. This quest is most suitable for suitors whom seek a more self-reliant and genuine journey; a journey to find worthy souls missing in action.
As the mission calls for locating the essence of humankind, here in San Diego, the endless stream of the latest gadgets may have warped us into a “twilight zone”. Thus, while mother nature beckons, our minds have been digitally seduced into a virtual world; a sub-reality of sorts. We seem to much prefer to bury our humanity within the confounds of ‘sci-fi-bred’ technologies. Rather than basking in the sun’s warmth, we choose often to bask in UV rays leaking from laptops. Instead of awaking to the song of birds, we often drift from sleep by the ringing tones of cellphones. As for being mesmerized by plush clouds floating by versus melting into youtube videos…can you guess? I could go on, but…where is everybody!
In light of civilization’s aspiration towards a ‘brighter’ future, we should note that technology is not necessarily the ‘elephant in the room’. The ‘elephant’ in this case would surely be the masterminds promoting such mind-blowing machinery; and how. While technology has propelled mankind’s progress in many areas of life (i.e. medical, scientific, educational, recreational, etc.), man has come to abuse the brilliance of this ‘high-tech’ era. To mention the birth of a few: cyber-bullying/ stalking, online terrorism, hacking/ phishing, etc. are fearfully on the rise?
As we swim in a sea of ‘hypnotizing’ electronics, digital gadgets have yet to actually stimulate the core of our being. Though they may very well simulate virtual objects of cultural/ social affections, they do little to accomplish complete substitution of humanity. While the current generation can boast of creating a substantial ‘high-tech’ footprint, has the ‘go-go-gadget’ era caused a malfunction in human civilization? An answer to that can only be found with the missing element; us. Who’s game for the mission?
