This Examiner recently received an email from Corinne Bishop who is a travel agent specializing in Gluten-Free cruises. Her daughter was diagnosed with Celiac Disease eight years ago and has been on a gluten-free diet since then. Corinne is currently coordinating a small gluten-free group going to the Bahamas for a four-day cruise from November 14th-18th, 2010 with Carnival Cruise lines, departing Port Canaveral. The cost is $260 per person (including port charges, and taxes for a shared cabin), which includes gluten-free food and assistance from Corinne who is also going on the cruse.
According to Ms. Bishop, cruise lines handle people on the gluten-free very well. When you board, you will be directed to customer service/guest relations where you will be given a menu and be asked to select the evening meal. At the evening meal you will be asked to order your breakfast where you can choose from gluten-free pancakes or french toast in addition to the traditional breakfast items like eggs and bacon.
They have gluten-free pasta on board all of their ships that can substituted for regular pasta. The gluten-free bread is freshly baked and arrives seperately in its own basket. Desserts are generally a gluten-free version of whatever is on the menu that day, which can include flourless chocolate cake and creme brulee.
Please note that gluten-free food is only available in the formal dining room, which is open for breakfast and dinner. Lunch is buffet style on the pool deck. There are not many gluten-free options for lunch, so you are encourage to bring snacks on board with you. This Examiner always travels with food and there are many options available that travel well.
