Kansas: An Uzbek man pleaded guilty to human trafficking charges. He admitted that he organized human trafficking scheme to bring more than 1000 guest workers from Uzbekistan through fraudulent visa. His attorney and prosecutors agreed that he would spend 41 months in jail.
Florida: Police arrested six men involved in a minor sex trafficking in Jacksonville last week. The men gave a 15 year old runaway teenager crack cocaine in exchange for sex. Then they held her captive for a month and sold her as sex slave until she managed to break free and called her mom. Three of the men were accused of purchasing sex from the teenager. If convicted, they’ll spend 10 years in jail.
Alabama: A Nicaraguan man was sentenced 10 months in jail for bringing a Nicaraguan woman to the state for prostitution. He admitted that he picked her up in Atlanta and brought her to Alabama to work for him. The arrest was made after the ICE received a tip from an informant that a Hispanic man was offering prostitution at a home. When searching the house, ICE agents found a Hispanic woman and three Hispanic men who are in the U.S. illegally.
New Mexico: A woman accused of forcing a woman into prostitution now faces human trafficking charges. Though it is rare that a victim self-reporting a human trafficking case, the victim in this case managed to escape the couple’s house and reported them to the police. She was forced into prostitution after being lured into coming to New Mexico. She was sold for sex by hour on the internet sex site by the couple.
Iowa: A 41 year old man was sentenced 17.5 years in jail on sexual abuse and human trafficking charges. He held a 17 year old girl against her will and physically and sexually abused her. The search of his residence began after the girl called 911 and told the agent that she was held against her will in the man’s residence.
Oregon: Portland man was charged on forced prostitution of 13 years old. He allegedly transported the girl to three other states for prostitution and beat her and threatened her when she resisted prostituting herself. He also allegedly got the address of the victim’s family and threatened her to kill them if she resisted. He faces minimum 15 year jail sentence if convicted to maximum life sentence in jail if convicted.
Austria: Police dismantled a gang of ten members in Vienna that forced 42 people to beg on the street. The members were arrested on the charges of human trafficking, and five of them will be extradited to Romania for trial. The victims were beaten by the traffickers when they do not make enough money
India: A Harvard human trafficking fellow reports child labor in India’s carpet industry. According to his report on CNN, the carpets are woven by the trafficked children or the children from untouchable class. Also, because they are young children, the report says that they are more likely to be coerced to work sixteen or eighteen hours a day. One trafficker that he interviewed claimed that he was constantly approached by the parents in search for opportunity to sell their children.
