I haven’t seen you here. Yes, I know we’ve never met but every time I go to Fresh and Easy in Manhattan Beach, there are more employees on the floor than customers. Maybe it’s my timing or I need to get my eyes checked. I don’t know because I keep finding good deals on food and beverages that live up to its name and there’s no crowd to fight through.
Since its 2007 arrival in the States, this Tesco ,a UK grocer. subsidiary has crept quietly through California, Nevada and Arizona. You may have received their flyers in the mail and thought nothing of it or said you would check them out, someday.
Let me go into more detail as to what you may have been missing out on. For starters, the prices are very reasonable and if you ask any floor clerk, you can sign up to receive coupons not found in the newspapers or the snail mail.
Getting in is easier than ever since those traveling from the north or east of Manhattan Beach can take Douglas as a side street. If you don’t want to deal with Almost Always Rush Hour Rosecrans Blvd., continue straight and make a left at the first island. Or if you’re saving gas or want to burn some calories, the Green Line South takes you right there with a five to ten minute walk. Until last week, I would have recommended the Aviation entrance east of the shopping center and proceed to the back entry to avoid traffic but was recently met by the boys in blue. Right, on to the good food at a better price.
Unlike many discount grocers in the area, the produce does not look as if it’s been in a fight. Bumps, bruises, dents are OK for my GM coupe but not on limes or cucumbers. Don’t assume that their pre-packed veggies are costly, either. I get a pair of firm, dark-green cucumbers that are almost eight inches long for less than $1.75. For salad freaks, this is your heaven. An iceberg head that’s actually larger than your hand is $0.99 and they also have herb, Italian, romaine, beet and spinach salads already cleaned and cut.
Like nearby Trader Joes, there are a variety of fresh and precooked meats and seafood. A good buy is the barbecue bundle which comes with six pieces of dark meat, four preformed beef (80/20) patties and four Italian sausage links – all for under $10.
However, cheese aficionados may be a tad disappointed as you may not find smoked mozzarella or a limited selection of brie but pure cheese lovers will find they can buy a pound of their favorite version of cheddar or jack for $5 every day! Also, the shredded versions are not loaded down with that powder to prevent sticking found in most name brand cheeses. Fresh and Easy also boasts that they use cows not treated with hormones(RBST) in their dairy products.
They have a large selection of desserts and my favorite is that that offer single servings, which is good if you have a double chin like me and not sharing with children. The bread selection is nice but let me know what you think about their brand of tortillas (smiles). If you love a simple, non-sweet but slightly spicy breakfast, try the jalapeno sourdough with garlic butter .Yes, that Irish Garlic Butter in the gold foil that the other place used to sell.
If you’ve ever been curious about spotted dick (an English pudding), raspberry chipotle barbecue sauce or coffee cake-flavored ground coffee, you’ll have to come on down and check it out for yourself. They don’t blast retro R&B music from the speakers but I promise it’s worth a visit if you’re trying to cut back on grocery spending or want to bring the restaurant experience home.
Although there is no real way for anyone to predict business longevity, the fact remains that when a treasure is gone, there is no time for procrastination.
