While at Endicott College, Pat Gaffney was a leader for the Gulls powerhouse Lacrosse team from the time he stepped onto the field as a Freshman. A product of St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury, MA, he was a rock for coach Sean Quirk as a long stick defender. In his four years at Endicott, Gaffney was a four-time All Commonwealth Coast Conference selection, a two-time All New England selection, the CCC Defensive player of the year and USILA All-American for his senior year in 2007.
Fueled by his success at both the high school and collegiate levels, Gaffney has gone on to make a career out of the sport that he has grown to love. Two years ago he got the opportunity to attend two separate open try-outs for the Major League Lacrosse (MLL). He was picked up by the Boston Cannon’s initially but didn’t stick on the roster his first year. He used that experience to train harder in the off-season, and this past summer he was given another chance with the Cannons and made the most of it, being put on the roster full-time. He has practiced with the Cannons all year long, and has gotten action in one game this season, but he is hoping to use that as a stepping stone towards a position in the starting line-up next year. “It’s been a really great experience for me, and I’ve enjoyed being a part of the team this summer,” says Gaffney. “It’s a spectacular group of guys, and it’s been amazing playing alongside some of the biggest names in lacrosse.”
Aside from his playing career, Pat has also started to make a name for himself as a lacrosse coach. In February of 2008 he was hired by Anna Maria College to be the head coach of the men’s lacrosse program in the first year of it’s existence. The program is still in it’s infancy, but Gaffney is happy to take on the challenge of building them into a contending team and looking forward to continuing to recruit and improve his squad. Pat has also gotten involved with coaching lacrosse at the youth level with his former high school coach, taking the role of co-director for the Rising Stars Lacrosse program. With Rising Stars, Gaffney is providing a youth lacrosse program for boys in the Worcester area. They hold a summer camp every year as well as an indoor fall and winter league. “I am happy to provide an organized program for these kids to play and learn the sport of lacrosse in, as it is something that I did not have available to me when I was their age,” says Gaffney.
