Welcome to First Set, a rundown of the best live jazz to be heard this weekend across the region, as well as a look at the week ahead.
Jacqui Naylor: This Bay Area vocalist is comfortable in any number of genres but there’s no denying her jazz touch. Catch her in the City with Art Khu (piano, guitar), Jon Evans (bass) and Josh Jones (drums). 9 p.m.; also 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Rrazz Room, Hotel Nikko, 222 Mason St., San Francisco. $35.
Al Jarreau with George Duke Trio: This gig represents more than just Jarreau’s return to the region following last month’s health scare. In truth, it’s a bit of Bay Area jazz history reborn, as these artists first collaborated here in the mid-‘60s. Click here for more. 7 p.m. Montalvo Arts Center, 15400 Montalvo Road, Saratoga. $25-$95.
Lisa Engelken with Olive Noir Ensemble: The Bay Area vocalist will showcase songs from her latest album, “Caravan.” Her band includes Grant Levin (piano), Joel Behrman (flugelhorn, trombone), Dave Scott (trumpet), Sam Bevan (bass) and Matt Swindells (drums). Click here for more. 9 p.m. Red Poppy Art House, 2698 Folsom St., San Francisco. $12-$20.
Coda Anniversary: The jazz supper club is celebrating its first year in business with a no-cover evening of drink specials, the occasional complimentary appetizer and music from Giovenco Project, Shotgun Wedding Quintet and Birth Of Cool. 7 p.m. 1710 Mission St., San Francisco.
John Handy: There isn’t a lot of jazz on the bill at this weekend’s Art & Soul festival but you do have the opportunity to catch this veteran saxophonist. 4:30 p.m. Plaza Stage, dowtown Oakland.
Mel Martin All-Star Big Band with Jamie Davis: Veteran saxman-bandleader Martin has been swinging hard for 20 years now and he’s found an adept accompanist in vocalist Davis. Their pairing comes courtesy of the Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society. 4:30 p.m. Douglas Beach House, Miramar Beach, Half Moon Bay. $35.
And pencil these in…
Laurie Antonioli: Mon., Yoshi’s, San Francisco
Eric Muhler: Mon., Yoshi’s, Oakland
