The economy has affected everyone’s household budget to some degree. One-income families, such as those with stay-at-home moms, might struggle to make ends meet from week to week. Although groceries can take a huge chunk out of the paycheck, families should never have to cut back on healthy food.
Phoenix resident Koni Gould is a community outreach representative for The Treasure Box program. Gould states, ” The Treasure Box is an economical food program that is designed to help families stretch their food budgets each month. With over 25 pounds of food in each month’s box, anyone can get $65 to $100 worth of food for $30.”
There are no stipulations or income requirements. Anyone really can participate in this food program.
Guadalupe Roman, from Surprise, is a single mom who supports her children by working two jobs. She says that by utilizing the Treasure Box program, she is able to help pay for some ‘extras’ as well as help support her daughter in college.
Other than the basic box, there are 3 specialty food boxes to choose from. See this month’s menus for more information on the Quick and Healthy Box, the Protein Box and the Kid Box.
A Holiday Box, available in November and December, includes a 12 to 15 pound turkey, ham, potatoes, mac and cheese casserole, stuffing, 3 pounds of veggies and 1 pie for only $35.

Ordering a box is simple. “With over 41 locations in the valley, residents can choose the location nearest to them to purchase a box,” explains Gould. Boxes are pre-purchased online or at a host site. Order by the second Sunday of the month to receive your box on the last Saturday of the month. Ordering and pick-up dates change over the holidays.
