A local Tea Party group is asking its followers to plan to attend a massive rally to be held this coming Sunday at the site of the destroyed World Trade Center in lower Manhattan, to protest the planned building of a mosque two blocks away.
The Essex County Tea Party Coalition today sent messages to their followers encouraging them to attend a rally to be held Sunday morning, August 22, at Park Place (the corner of Church Street and West Broadway), by the newly assembled Coalition to Honor Ground Zero. The plan is to meet at 8:30 a.m. to greet the participants of the ninth annual America’s 9/11 Ride. The Patriot Guard Riders of New York will also be on hand. Then at 10:30 a.m., according to the ECTPC, the rally will begin.
Earlier this week, the ECTPC forwarded a flyer announcing another rally at the Park Place site, to take place on September 11, 2010, the ninth anniversary of the tragic events in which the entire World Trade Center was destroyed.
In related news, the Coalition to Honor Ground Zero called attention to a statement made by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-8), as quoted here yesterday in The Washington Times, in which she called for “looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded.” The Coalition protested the remarks as an example of “tyranny.” The Coalition also maintains this page detailing what they know, as reported variously in The Weekly Standard and Pajamas Media, about where the money to build the proposed mosque and community center, named Cordoba House, is coming from.
The full context of Pelosi’s remarks was actually more than a little odd, and suggested that Pelosi actually had a more parochial concern: “How is this being ginned up that here we are talking about Treasure Island, something we’ve been working on for decades, something of great interest to our community as we go forward to an election about the future of our country and two of the first three questions are about a zoning issue in New York City?” Treasure Island, the former Naval base in San Francisco Bay, is a man-made island that the Navy has now agreed in writing to transfer to the city of San Francisco. Pelosi made her remarks at yesterday’s ceremony in which the Navy signed the island over to the city, as a related Fox News Channel video makes clear.
Pelosi also spoke of “joining others” who have called for an investigation into the funding of the opposition. Who those “others” might be, or whether anyone other than Pelosi is calling for any such investigation, is not clear.
