Does anybody remember the mantra of the 1992 Clinton/Gore campaign? To refresh your memory, it was “It’s the economy, stupid!” The essence of this aphorism was to remind all of Clinton’s staff that the issue Americans care about above all others is the economy. Don’t lose your focus. Keep the end in mind. Don’t get sidetracked by minor issues. It’s the economy, stupid!
So, what the heck is going on with today’s politicians? Have any of them noticed that one in six people are out of work? Have they forgotten thirteen trillion dollars of debt? Do any of them realize we are in a tunnel of economic funk and nobody sees any light at the end of it? Apparently not.
Constitution? What Constitution?
Over the past few days, we’ve watched politicians on both sides of the aisle stand before the cameras and opine on immigration, a mosque in New York City, and Proposition 8 being overturned in California. Some incredibly outrageous proposals have made their way from these duly elected representatives to the US Congress. These are the people who actually took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Given some of the inanity and downright stupid thoughts coming from these people, you have to wonder whether they’ve actually read the Constitution.

******You’re building a mosque where: “We’ll allow a mosque to be built near Ground Zero when the Islam people allow us to build a church in Mecca.”
Here are the first sixteen words of the 1st Amendment to the US Constitution: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”
For crying out loud—the first sixteen words! You’d think some of these mental midgets on Capitol Hill would at least know the first sixteen words of the US Constitution. Unbelievable! Blocking that mosque is impossible. As much as many of us detest the thought of a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero, we detest more the trampling of the US Constitution.
******Immigration: “Let’s change the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. That’ll stop those pesky immigrants from abusing the border.”
Here is the first line of the 14th Amendment: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
It’s the first line! A whole slew of politicians are now proposing to eliminate the “born” part, like that will somehow stop drug dealers from dragging tons of marijuana across the border, or stop a dirt poor hungry man, desperate to feed his family, from seeking work.
******Gay marriage and California’s Prop 8: “Two thousand years of modern man and we’re ready to throw away heterosexuality.”
Here is part of the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence. (Items in parentheses are my observations):
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness (Are gays not allowed the pursuit of happiness?). That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it (come November, the voters WILL be abolishing it), and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes (see above–morons in Congress wanting to change the 1st and 14th Amendments. Come November, vote out the incumbents who have failed to remember that “It’s the economy, stupid!”
