Wednesday, Dr. Laura Schlessinger announced that she will no longer do her radio program when her contract is up at the end of the year; Schlessinger announced her decision first on Larry King Live Tuesday night.
Schlessinger made it clear that she is not retiring, nor is she quitting, but that she will focus more on her website, books, a YouTube channel and other activities.
“I’m not retiring,” she told King. “I’m not quitting.”
The announcement comes after last week’s on-air rant in which she freely used the N-word repeatedly, and upset people around the country. Major sponsors of her program pulled out of her show after the comments, including General Motors and Motel 6. Schlessinger offered a statement that said she was trying to make a philosophical point by using the N-word on her show, but admitted that she wasn’t helping the caller by doing so. Critics said that it wasn’t an apology.
During the August 10 phone call with a black woman, Schlessinger said:
“Black guys use it all the time. Turn on HBO and listen to a black comic, and all you hear is n****r, n****r, n****r. I don’t get it. If anybody without enough melanin says it, it’s a horrible thing. But when black people say it, it’s affectionate. It’s very confusing.”
Schlessinger said that she has doesn’t want to do radio anymore so she can say what she wants to say.
“The reason is, I want to regain my First Amendment rights,” she said. “I want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry, some special interest group deciding this is the time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates, attack sponsors. I’m sort of done with that.”
