Build cycle times are one of the biggest problems builders face. I’ve seen builders stop production for a house when a problem arises (and one always does) for 2, 3 and even 4 weeks while they attempt to come up with a perfect solution! Well…get over it! There is no better time and place then right now to figure it out.
Stopping the home’s production schedule, or even delaying it is a non-option if you’re serious about making money in the building business.
Having worked on more than 550 homes, I’ve seen cycle times vary from 74 to 180 days for the exact same house. Once we made a determination on how to resolve issues that were sure to come up, how to schedule a home in the first place, how to keep it on target, our cycle times were consistently faster, we had better quality, happier clients, and made more money.
Have you ever heard the saying “time equals money?” In this business nothing could be more accurate. Whether it be the interest clock ticking, loss of opportunity costs, or the loss of a client because you were so darn slow in building the house for them, you’re losing money if you’re not building in a timely, quick manner.
Figure out your best schedule, stick to it, and make more money.
