After a disappointing read of Laurell K Hamilton’s latest Anita Blake novel, this reviewer wasn’t holding out much hope for her other series, Merry Gentry. But when this reviewer started reading Divine Misdemeanors, a smile formed and it became clear that Ms. Hamilton has tried to stay true to this series at least. Bravo!
This story gets into the action right away, where Merry is at a crime scene where a couple of demi-fey have been brutally murdered. From then on there, Merry and her men try to help the police in their investigations, but being a faerie princess is like being a celebrity, so the papprazzi are always out and about looking to take pictures of her, even while working.
Without giving too much of the plot away, as a long time reader of this series, I was happy to see what made me love it in the first place. Merry is a detective who works magical cases because of her background as a princess of the fey.
This installment is a nice throwback to the first book in the series. She is out of faerie and back in Los Angeles with her many men. While there is sex going on, it does not take over the book. A lot of the of the story, besides investigating a murder, is Merry trying to be the leader of her people. If nothing else, Ms. Hamilton can definitely write good dialogue for so many characters. As a reader you can believe in her as a writer.
Overall, this was a nice and welcome surprise. One can only hope that she will bring Anita Blake back as well.
The book gets a 4 out of 5. From the opening scene until the end, the story never really let up, even when the crazy sex happened. The mystery of the murders and the eventual outcome was a bit of a shock to this reviewer as you don’t see it coming until almost the end of the book. Even the ending was tied up all nice and tidy, which leads one to strongly believe book 9 is in the works. Don’t let this one pass you by.
Now do you agree or disagree with this review? Did you like it? Hate it? Thank you!
