For the educator, professional development is an ongoing effort and challenge. Online learning programs provide opportunities for professional development through the medium of distance education. But what if the “distance” was actually in your locale? Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD), in partnership with a leading educational leadership organization and two local universities, offers professional development for teachers and administrators K-12 with the convenience and flexibility of online courses.
PSESD and its partner organization, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), provide interactive multimedia courses for educators to expand both their knowledge and opportunities for career advancement. These online classes cover a wide range of topics and a window of six months to complete each course. Some courses are also recognized for credit at Seattle University and Seattle Pacific University.
The benefits of these classes include twenty-four access to learning materials and online presentations from nationally recognized education consultants. To earn college credit for online classes, students must complete all assignments, take advantage of learning resources (lessons, reading material, complete a course log, and utilize discussions) and submit a two page topical paper. After meeting these requirements, course participants are eligible for post-baccalaureate credit.
In addition to online professional development, some of the ASCD courses are pre-approved by PSESD for clock hours. PSESD offers clock hours, or training opportunities, to ensure that state certified teachers and administratiors remain current in their fields. In this way ASCD online courses allow educators to meet state requirements for professional development attendance.
The PSESD and ASCD online partnership offers a convenient method of study for educators who want to further their education or to stay up-to-date on their fields. Flexible scheduling, online assistance and the opportunity for personal enrichment are all benefits of enrolling in online professional development courses. Taking advantage of these courses also provides educators with the necessary tools and resources to improve student achievement, the most important consideration of education.
