- Scott’s POLITICAL QUIZ for AUGUST 2010
In a Gallup poll conducted Monday evening, August 17, 2010, results showed that more Americans disapproved of President Barack Obama’s comments concerning the construction of the mosque in Manhattan than approved. The poll was regarding comments made by the President several days earlier at a celebratory dinner marking the beginning of the Ramadan holiday at the White House.
Obama said that the persons who were planning to build a Muslim center and mosque within two blocks of the 9-11 terror attacks in Manhattan, New York have a right to build there. The following day, Obama clarified his statement by saying that his comments at the dinner were only meant to endorse the legality – not the wisdom – of building the mosque at that location. Opponents of the Islamic center and mosque being placed so close to Ground Zero believe it is insensitive to those killed in the attack as well as their families.
Specific data reveals that 37% of Americans disapproved of his comments while 20% approved. 41% said they didn’t know enough about the situation to comment and 2% gave no answer.
Most people who have an opinion on the matter hold their opinions strongly. 32% disapprove strongly and 5% disapprove not strongly. 16% approve strongly and 4% approve not strongly.
The actual wording of the poll was as follows: As you may know President Obama recently made comments about the construction of this mosque. From what you have heard or read, do you approve or disapprove of what President Obama said – or don’t you know enough to say? PROVE: Do you (approve/disapprove) strongly, or not strongly?
It is assumed that this issue has brought Obama’s approve rating down further than it was already down prior to this incident. As of Thursday, August 12, 2010, Obama’s approval rating was 44%, and by Tuesday, August 17th, his rating had fallen to 41%. This is Obama’s lowest rating since he became President nineteen months ago.
Further data in the poll shows that, in general, awareness of (as well as approval or disapproval of) Obama’s comments on the mosque followed party lines. Republicans are paying much more attention to the story than Democrats or independent voters. Republicans strongly disapprove of Obama’s comments by a ratio of approximately 2-out-of-every-3 while the independents also more strongly disapproving than approving also. The Democrats who indicated they are following the news story, in general, approved of Obama’s comments, though approximately half of the Democrats polled said they have no opinion on the story primarily because many of them didn’t know anything about the story.
