David Silva’s latest offering from Creative Beast, the 1/30th scale Acrocanthosaurus, has been available for purchase since June 2010. Approximately 15 inches long, it is Silva’s largest kit and retails for $175 including US shipping.
Another favorite of Silva’s, he said there was something about the animal that made it more interesting to him then T-Rex, Spinosaurus or Allosaurus.
“I love the Acro’s skeleton and I just wanted to see a really cool recreation of it,” said Silva. “It’s almost like a fantasy creature.”
Silva said he was motivated to depict the creature in combat to give it life and energy. It shows fresh battle wounds and is twisting as it quickly circles its potential prey, an Ankylosaur called Gastonia, which is slated for release in the early months of 2011.
With the Acro out, Silva has turned his attention to a few new projects including a Velociraptor action figure kit and a dragon of his own design. And as those take shape, the aforementioned Gastonia will be completed and released.
His intention was to create a piece that could be displayed separately with it’s scars or locked in mortal combat.
“Just the kid in me wanted to see some blood on that dinosaur,” Silva said with a laugh.
For readers keeping score, all this means Creative Beast Studio is turning out kits at a rate of six a year, which is remarkable for a one man show which does everything but cast the kits. For that, Silva has turned to both Mike Evans at Alchemy Works and Chris Lynch at Ravenstar.
However, to have a new kit out every two months or so means that between his freelance toy sculpting and his personal projects, he is more or less sculpting all the time. Silva said that he finds sculpting for himself a form of relaxation, so he doesn’t mind putting in a couple hours each night.
“I’m the kind of person that when I get an idea, it’s really important to me to see it get done,” he said.
For fans of dinosaur modeling, that means a wealth of quality kits coming out of Creative Beast at regular intervals and something new to look forward to all the time.
