In a busy square just across from the Dutch Parliament building in The Hague (“Den Haag” for my Netherlands contingent) sits an unassuming spot that can satisfy your palate by day and at night transforms into a trendy avant-garde dance spot for the masses. Millers is a place where you can relax in the casual atmosphere of the outdoor café, engage in the time-honored tradition of people watching, enjoy the occasional beer or cocktail and indulge your appetite with a delightful meal.
We selected Millers purely by chance, and the encounter turned out to be mostly a positive one. To my relief—even though I was flanked by two Dutchmen whose English language skills are excellent—the waitress offered me a menu in English, thus the need for constant translations was eliminated.

I began my meal with a Jupiler beer (must be 18 years of age or older to enter site), a pale lager that is apparently geared towards the more masculine set; however, this feminine sort still enjoyed the relatively light and refreshing taste.
A Club Sandwich is fairly run-of-the-mill and something that you can find on many menus, but it was my safest bet for the day as I was in the mood for ‘kip’ (chicken). The sandwich was an uncomplicated thing of beauty. With modest amounts of lettuce, cucumber, tomato and smoked chicken between three pieces of toasted bread, it was just enough to fight off hunger without stuffing me beyond belief. The only downfall was the smoked chicken: the sandwich would have been better served with the addition of real smoked chicken breast, not the deli-thin slices whose flavor was almost lost in the combination of all the other ingredients.
Served alongside the club sandwich was a handful of very thin purple potato chips made from, well, purple potatoes from Italy. The flavor was not altogether potato-y, but the delicate thin chips had a flavor that was equally subtle and tantalizing.
Millers also serves a dish called Van Dobben, which is a beef croquette served with a mustard/mayo combo sauce and a side of lettuce and tomatoes with a slice of whole wheat bread. While I was not the one to eat the croquettes, I have it on good authority from my husband—who partook in one of his favorite quick dishes—that there was nothing particularly spectacular about the dish and it was a bit on the bland side. A croquette is a croquette is a croquette, I guess.
Given the chance, when back in Holland I would probably eat at Millers again to sample some of the other menu items (such as the Caprese Panini with mozzarella, tomatoes, pesto and shallots, or the Kreeftensoep (lobster soup) and perhaps the Tonijsalade (Tuna Salad) on a whole wheat roll with shallots and pickles. Until that day comes, I’m sure Millers will have more than enough patronage from their Dutch customers who are accustomed to the types of food coming out of the kitchen that I can’t even pronounce.
