Whether you have a creative urge, just want to have fun and socialize, watch a theatre or musical performance or enjoy looking at some exceptional artwork, you are welcome at The Carrollwood Cultural Center. Located in the heart of the Carrollwood community in Tampa, it is accessible from everywhere in the area, far and wide.
This beautiful state-of-the-art facility opened in March of 2008 and houses fully equipped classrooms, and meeting rooms which can be rented at a reasonable cost for any occasion. CCC is non-profit and is the result of a partnership between Hillsborough County and the surrounding community and because of this, tuition and rates are lower than they would be at a private, for-profit facility.
Classes for Session V began on August 2nd, but registration for Session VI, which starts on September 20th, will begin on September 7th, if not sooner. Check for catalogs at least two weeks prior to the first day of class by calling 813-269-1310. They are also soliciting suggestions for future classes and you can email your ideas to Helen Michaelson at: [email protected] Besides artistic classes, CCC offers instruction in computers, cuisine, etiquette for young ladies and young gentlemen, languages, personal finance and wellness. The classes are all taught by professionals in their respective fields and are relatively inexpensive.
CCC also has a variety of community programs available, including a bridge club, Broadway Kids, a book club, chess club, community chorus, a woodcarvers chapter and a women authors book club. The Broadway Kids club requires an audition and charges $50 per month and is open to young people from age 8 to age 14. Otherwise, the rest of the clubs are free.
To satisfy those who are looking for a little entertainment, there are musical and theatrical performances for the young and the not-so-young. Coming up on Friday, August 20th at 7:30P.M. is a program called “Jazz with Jim”, featuring Jim Burge & The Jazz Dimensions (Dick Rumore, Paul Provinzano and Tom Ziegelhofer.) The musical set will be accented by a commentary on the history of jazz styles and should be of interest to jazz buffs and general music lovers alike. This will be just the first in a series of monthly performances by the combo which will appear again on September 17th, October 29th and November 18th. All shows are at 7:30P.M. and tickets are only $7 for members and $10 for non-members.
Other performances being offered in the fall include live musical productions by The Play’n Around Travelng Children’s Theatre; “Die Fledermaus (The Bat”) by the South Florida Lyric Opera; “Lustful Temptations”, “a complex gospel play”, which was written, directed, produced by and starring actor Charles E. Smith Jr., who has worked with some of the greats in Hollywood; “Love, Sex and the IRS” by MDHF Productions; “Legends of Broadway”, starring acclaimed conductor and pianist Donald Pippin and Broadway stage and television actor/singer Ronald Raines in a montage of Broadway hits (Pippin and Raines will also conduct an audition-only master class for serious area vocalists.); “Seriously Sinatra”, presented by the Salerno Theatre Company; “War of the Worlds”, a re-creation of the scary old radio play which will be performed as it was long ago on a bare set with actors reading scripts; and “Music Reborn”, presented by the Tampa Ameet Chapter of Hadassah and the Center, the third annual performance of music composed by victims of the Nazi Holocaust.
And, don’t miss the Masquerade Ball FUNdraiser on October 23rd! For more information or to be a sponsor, please call 813-269-1310, extension 201 or email [email protected]
