Shu Uemura Art of Hair stylist Conrad Dornan recently teamed up with V! Magazine and model/student Coco Young for a cool video interview titled, “Hair Play.” In the video, Coco Young reveals what she’s been up to lately, talks about her favorite movie (The Eyes of Laura Mars with Faye Dunaway) and about a photographer she really likes (hint: it isn’t me…at least not yet!). Conrad will create an elegant, side braid from a book of photographs (watch the video to find out what photograph, and photographer, Coco wants to channel).
I’ve been holding off posting this for a short while, because I wanted to try, and review, the major products Conrad used for this video: Silk Oil, Sheer Lacquer (hair spray) and Kaze Wave (texturizing foam).
Look #1 – Side Braid
To create the side braid from the photograph Coco selected, simply slick your hair back in a semi-tight ponytail Make a braid, maybe using a bit of Shu Uemura Silk Oil Camelia Smoothing Fluid ($33.00 1.7 fl oz.). This lightweight serum is really great for all types of hair, even hair that has been damaged or colored. I love this pampering, multi-tasking product! It will help with frizz and flyaways, and that just looks dull and dry. It helps to add shine as well, and even better, it will help protect your hair against heat-styling protection. This luxe silkener smells like a fresh floral. Use it on wet hair or to perk up dry hair that needs TLC.
Then take the braid and wrap it around your head like a hair band, using large pins to secure the braid. Easy! Great for hot Summer days and nights. You might also use some Sheer Lacquer hair spray to keep the look sleek, not sloppy.
Look #2 – 70’s style (Eyes of Laura Mars) cascade of Curls
For the next look, Conrad re-created a Faye Dunaway hairstyle from the Eyes of Laura Mars. To get the look, first section off the top part of your hair, and apply Kaze Wave (texturizing foam), to the bottom portion of your hair to bulk it up a bit. Use your blow dryer to lock in the product. Kase Wave ($33.00 5 fl. oz) comes in a pressurized pump top. It’s formulated with acacia gum that helps define curls and give them a flexible, soft hold. it also helps give your hair some natural shine and protection from heat styling tools. The scent is described as “green florals enveloped in Lily of the Valley”, but to me it just smells like a light, Spring bouquet. I’m not personally doing a lot of curls on my own hair, but a golf ball sized bit of this rich foam dissipates quickly into your hair, and doesn’t feel heavy or greasy. If you want great curls, try this product!
After you’ve then set your entire head with a small curling iron, spray each section to secure the curls. Then take your hair dryer and blow out the curls just a little so they are not quite so tight.
Spray with Sheer Lacquer Finishing Spray $33.00 8 fl. oz. I love the all in one, wide spray top on this product that evenly distributes a micro-fine finishing spray. A little bit dries quickly, and holds nicely. But if you want a luxe hair spray to make your look more “Jerseylicious” or Snookie-ish” you’ll be happy to know that this Shu Uemura hair spray provides buildable hold –so spray away all day! The product also has ingredients to help protect your hair from UV damage, and it’s safe for color-treated hair.

Obviously, a master stylist and a beautiful girl will make the prettiest video, but us mere mortals (not models) can also have great hair using these products, too. Visit Shu Uemura the Art of Hair Web Site to learn more.
