Audio: Conn. beer gunman Thornton to police: ‘I’m not going to kill anyone else’
MANCHESTER, Conn. — Just moments after killing 8 people at the beer distribution plant in Conn., Omar Thornton, dialed the police and told them, “I took it into my hands.”
Thornton said in a recording of the call that he did it because he worked in a “racist place.”
Thornton, age 34, also said on the four-minute 911 recording, “I wish I could have got more of the people.” Then he added, “I’m not going to kill anybody else.”
Thornton shot himself and 8 others after he resigned from the company where he was shown videotape of himself stealing beer from the Hartford Distributors, says CNN
Thornton’s girlfriend, Kristi Hannah, had seen him the night before and he never indicated he was going to kill anyone.
Thornton called his mother on the day of the event and apologized for what he had done and told her goodbye.
Kristi Hannah did say Thornton had pictures on his cell phone of the N word written in a bathroom and a picture of a noose on the bathroom wall. Thornton was feeling racially harassed.
“He said the company was prejudiced and they pushed him,” said Annette Levine, a cousin of Thornton’s mother. “Those were the last words he told his mom: He loved her and they pushed him over the edge.”
The company says he never filed a racial discrimination complaint.
Says San Francisco resident Patty McGowan, “It’s terrible that he killed people. There is no getting away with how dreadful that was. He should never have done it.”
“But I think that that company has a lot of self-investigation to do as well. Not everyone can just turn a blind eye to racial abuse. Why, anyway, in this day and age are people discriminating against people they chose to hire? Makes you wonder if the pictures that Thornton took from the bathroom walls have now, conveniently, been removed? I hope someone looks into Hartford Distributors and fires their management for allowing any kind of harassment to take place. And worse, that the employees never felt comfortable enough to come and tell them about it”
