What better way to help Christian author Robin Caroll celebrate her birthday (August 19) then to conduct an interview with her that will introduce this warm, inspiring, and talented author to potential new readers and help current readers know her better.
Who is Robin Caroll?
I love boxing. I love Hallmark movies. I love fishing. I love scrapbooking. Nope, I’ve never fit into the boxes people have wanted to put me in.
I grew up in Louisiana in the 70s as the baby in my family—adored, but never spoiled. (My two older brothers and two older sisters made sure of that.) The writing bug bit early. At 7 years old, I started writing skits and performing them for my family. I’ve never stopped.
I got married in 1989, have three daughters—nineteen, ten, and eight—and recently became a grandmother to a grandson, and live in Little Rock, Arkansas.
I’m passionate about writing, but also about giving back to the industry that has given me my dreams. I’m the past president of ACFW (2007 and 2008) and am currently the director of the annual ACFW writer’s conference.
I’d describe myself as Spiritual, not religious, with a diverse Christian background.
Bottom line? I love Jesus and will follow Him wherever He leads me.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Reading, scrapbooking, being with family and friends.
Of the books you’ve written, which is your favorite and why? That’s like asking a parent which of their children is the favorite! lol Seriously, each story is special to me in its own, unique way.
Where do you draw inspiration from for your characters? I use a multitude of places for character inspiration…movies, people I know, other characters from other books, etc.
Of all the characters you’ve created, which one do you identify with the most and why? Hmmm..that’s hard. For the most part, there’s a little bit of me in every character I create. I’ll let YOU decide what bit of whom! lol
What issues are the characters working through in your latest release, Fear No Evil? My hero is struggling with remaining strong in faith as his father battles a deathly illness. My heroine is facing her abusive past, and how she can learn to overcome her trust issues.
What kind of research did you have to do for your books? While my books are fiction, I truly try to have them based in fact. For instance, for Fear No Evil, I interviewed former gang members to get details factual.
Describe your newest release, Fear No Evil? With his father in a nursing home and his mother needing support, former Great Smoky Mountains park ranger Lincoln Vailes moves to the bayou town of Eternal Springs, Louisiana, to become a police officer. Recent college graduate and eager social worker Jade Laurent has also moved there to try and right the wrongs of an abusive past. But someone is running her car off the road and pointing guns in her direction. As Lincoln investigates her case, he uncovers ties to big-city gang warfare up north that appears to be making its evil way down south.
How did you get involved in writing? I’ve always been writing…journals, stories, plays.
What do you enjoy most and least about the writing process? Most…the creation of character and plot. Least? I guess the marketing. Not that I don’t enjoy it, I do, to a degree, but sometimes it squelches the creative process.
What advice would you offer an aspiring author? If you feel called to write, do NOT give up!
What fun or silly moment can you share from your recent Thriller Book Signing tour with fellow authors Brandilyn Collins, Tosca Lee, and Jim Rubart? Oh, my…there’s so many….Jim and his hair, and sign. Brandilyn and “where are we?” Tosca and “you are dead to me.” So many, many fun memories that I’ll always cherish.
What story ideas would you like to explore in the future? I have a few bouncing around in my head…we’ll see where they go. :)
What has God been teaching you lately? He’s always teaching me. Sometimes it changes day-to-day…sometimes hour-by-hour…and sometimes, if I’m being really hard-headed, I’m circling that mountain for some time. LOL
