The new Chi Dynasty in Studio City–just over the hill, from Los Angeles–brings an upscale dining experience to this San Fernando Valley town. And the food and service are tops, too. When you walk in the room you leave the western world, and Ventura Boulevard behind and feel as though you’re in a restaurant in China.
There’s an open kitchen where chefs seem to be doing culinary tricks with their knives and utensils. The heady food aromas whafting from the stoves whet your appetite.
We sampled the fare just a week after it opened. Often a new restaurant has kinks to iron out, but this one seems to be running smoothly from the get go. Probably because the company has operated a popular eatery in the Los Feliz area for 27 l years.
The room is classic and inviting with a gorgeous bar and booths with red latice work. We started with vegetable and chicken pot stickers that were perfect. Then Richard had the Shrimp a la Chi in a ginger, garlic and egg white sauce ($14,95) which he said was fantastic. I couldn’t share as I’m allergic to shell fish. But my Hunan sizzling white fish was enough to keep me happily contented. It came just as promoted, sizzling, mixed with green peppers in a perfect, spicy sauce ($14.75).
We also shared an order of mixed mushrooms aptly named “Mushroom Delight” gently soaked in an oyster sauce ($10.25).
There’s a reasonably-priced wine selection with house bottles going for $18. We picked a fabulous Ferrari Carona Chardonnay that was just $30, a real steal.
Our waiter wore a million dollar smile and made the evening even more pleasant by his warm attitude. While only open a short time, locals were already streaming in the doors. I think this place is going to be a big hit with Valley folks as well as Anglenos willing to drive over the hill.
