Released by the NBA and ESPN accounts on twitter.com, both announced that Cleveland fans offered to pay for the fine. The fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers are backing the letter Dan Gilbert wrote in response to Lebron James leaving Cleveland. His controversial letter criticizing Lebron James leaving Cleveland for Miami has sparked an outpouring of support. A team spokesman said the team has received thousands of e-mails and phone calls, including some from fans offering to help Gilbert pay a $100,000 NBA-imposed fine. In response Dan Gilbert has released this statement.
“The humbling offer by so many is another reflection of the strength of Cavs fans and the people who live and work in this region and are always the first to step up and have each other’s back,” Gilbert said. “I will pay this fine myself, but would be grateful and highly appreciative for any fan who redirects the dollars they kindly offered to contribute towards this fine to the Cavaliers Youth Fund, which will positively impact our region’s kids through the numerous local charitable groups the Cavaliers Youth Fund supports.”
Dan Gilbert was fined $100,000 dollars by the NBA commissioner David Stern, when Gilbert released a heated response open letter minutes after Lebron James’ one hour espn announcement. Regardless that the commissioner was displeased with the letter, the message was just what the spurned fans of Cleveland wanted to hear. David Stern had fined Gilbert for his letter this past Monday, and said that he felt the letter and comments of Dan Gilbert stating that he felt James quitting in the playoff’s in the past two years were a little extreme.
More controversy was surrounding Dan Gilbert on twitter.com Someone formed a fake twitter account claiming to be Gilbert, and posting outlandish tweets towards Lebron James, and a supposed heated reaction towards Jessie James. Not only did those tweets cause an uproar on twitter.com, but in social media in general. After an investigation it was confirmed by the Cleveland Cavaliers that the Cavaliers majority owner does in fact have a twitter account, just not that one that was posting all the propaganda.
