Congressman Chris Carney (D-PA-11th) held a telephone press conference today calling out his Republican opponent Tom Marino for Marino’s attacks on Carney and proposed legislation to make the Hyde Amendment permanent.
The Hyde Amendment, originally came into law in 1976 and prohibits the use of federal funds for abortion. The Hyde Amendment is not a permanent fix, but is generally added as an amendment to appropriations bills passed by Congress. There is a recent proposal in Congress that attempts to make the Hyde Amendment permanent.
Marino attacked Carney for not co-sponsoring the legislation, and also attacked Carney for not responding to his calls for action. Carney, who is a Naval Reserve Officer, was on active duty during the last week and was unable to comment due to Navy regulations which prohibited him from making comments while on active duty.
PA Politics, a website which covers politics in Pennsylvania, came down hard on Marino, writing on August 6th:
The Marino campaign – their attempt at a “gotcha” on Congressman Chris Carney surrounding his support/lack of support for House Resolution 5939 is shameful – immediately before rushing home to be with his wife for her breast cancer surgery, Congressman Carney, a cancer survivor himself, was in the uniform of his country undertaking his military duty as a Predator/Reaper Mission Commander (Google it if you don’t know what they are) – I don’t know, but perhaps while away from the Capitol wearing the uniform of a US Naval Officer and fighting the “bad guys” overseas the Congressman decided it wasn’t appropriate to engage in “politics” while on active duty– look, we all know this game is a full contact sport, but in this case the Marino campaign should be called for a “Personal Foul
Carney’s Official Response
Tom Marino has demonstrated the true character of his campaign in recent days, using gutter politics of the worst kind to attack Congressman Chris Carney (PA-10) repeatedly while the congressman was fulfilling his Navy Reserve obligation and was unable to respond. The attacks waged over the past several days, culminating with a story in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette yesterday, came on an issue that Congressman Carney has displayed staunch support — making the Hyde Amendment permanent so that there is a strict ban against federal funding for abortion. Furthermore, he continued to attack after knowing the truth: That Congressman Carney has not yet co-sponsored a bill to make the Hyde Amendment permanent because he left Washington the day the legislation was introduced late last month to be with his wife before her breast cancer surgery. He expects to co-sponsor it Tuesday, when Congress reconvenes.
“My priority in the time leading up to Jen’s surgery on July 30 was my family,” said Congressman Carney. “The way that Tom Marino has carried out this latest attack, repeatedly attacking on this issue when he knew the circumstances, demonstrates he is bereft of basic human decency. It is gutter politics of the worst kind and it has absolutely no place in our community.”
Congressman Carney continued: “Tom Marino’s campaign was quoted in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette yesterday saying that my active duty was ‘no reason to stop communicating with the press.’ Had Tom Marino ever served in uniform, he would know that the military strictly prohibits political activity while on active duty.
“The last few days have demonstrated a great deal about Tom Marino’s character and singular lack of integrity.”
