I took a crack at the Canadian Golf and Country Club’s West Course and gave my brain, along with my game, a rousing good workout in the process.
The 6,430-yard, par 72 track drove me to think about each shot as I pulled a club, put it back, then pulled another bat from my rack.
Owner Mark Seabrook’s well-maintained course makes certain that players get their money’s worth.
Players will use all of their clubs as they attempt to strike shots that will settle in strategic spots on the visually challenging layout.
“The West Course, with multiple doglegs and abundant water hazards, tests even the straightest of shots,” says Seabrook on Canadian’s website. “Our West Course is well respected across the region for its great layout and outstanding conditions and is located just 10 minutes west of Kanata and about 20 minutes from downtown Ottawa.”
Another major factor that comes into play is that the majority of holes on the Canadian are framed by dense forest.
During my game, the trees on the wicked dogleg that is the par 4, 320 yard, No. 12 provided for a not-so-excellent adventure. I blocked my drive into the wildlife preserve on the left, bruised some bark on my second shot and then chipped to within 30 feet. Three putts later, I had a six.
The play on No. 12 is to club down and hit right. You may still have to carry some leaves, but the angle is better for a high approach — and I mean hit it high — if you want it to stick on the green with the pronounced bump in the middle.
