Matthew “Matt” Hales – who is better known in the music industry as Aqualung – is an English singer/songwriter who grew up in his parents independent record shop and at the age of 16 was awarded a scholarship to study music composition at Winchester College. The next year he wrote his first symphony entitled “Life Cycle”. While he was still a teenager he formed his first band, which went by several different names, producing one album, but they soon broke up.
In 1990, Hales moved to London to study music at City University where he formed a band with his brother Ben. They released several singles as well as an album, but they had very little success. In 2001, they were signed to Mercury Records, released two more singles, but in the following year they were dropped by the record label and the duo split up.
In the fall of 2002, Hales (as Aqualung) released his debut single “Strange and Beautiful (I’ll Put a Spell on You),” was released in the UKafter gaining popularity as the soundtrack on an advertisement for the new Volkswagen Beetle. The single reached number 7 in the UK Top 40 and was featured in the film Wicker Park. This was followed shortly thereafter by his eponymous debut album, “Aqualung”.
His second album “Still Life” was released in 2003 to critical acclaim albeit limited commercial success. A compilation of tracks from his first two albums was released in the U.S. entitled “Strange and Beautiful,” following a new contract being signed with Columbia Records for future worldwide releases.The track “Brighter Than Sunshine” – today’s Song of the Day –b became a big hit and enjoyed Top 40 airplay after being featured in the film A Lot Like Love. Songs have also been featured on shows such as Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, The O.C., Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs, CSI, Cold Case and Skins.
Aqualung released his next album “Memory Man” in 2007, which featured the singles “Pressure Suit” and “Cinderella”
Besides touring and working with Leona Lewis on her album “Echo,” Aqualung recorded his latest album “Magnetic North” was released in April of this year.
