Can a Republican win Joe Biden’s former seat? Christine O’Donnell tops Chris Coons in Rasmussen poll!
WILMINGTON, DE – In the special election for Joe Biden’s vacated Senate seat, late last week, Rasmussen Reports revealed a result that may be surprising to some who considered Republican candidate Christine O’Donnell’s March 10th announcement a long shot. In the Rasmussen poll, O’Donnell fared better than her Democrat challenger Chris Coons. The most recent polling has Christine ahead in the Senate race over Coons 41% / 39%.
Before O’Donnell faces Coons, she must first best her GOP primary opponent Mike Castle. A nine term Delaware Congressman, Castle has been criticized from the right for his liberal voting record. Castle has voted for the stimulus bill, cap and trade, gun control legislation, and remains in favor of legalized abortion and embryonic stem cell research.
In 2008, Christine O’Donnell received nearly 40% of the vote in her run for Delaware’s US Senate seat, running against long-time sitting Senator and Vice Presendential candidate Biden.
As O’Donnell surges, speculation has already begun as to whether Castle will leave the Republican party and run as an independent as Charlie Crist has done in the Florida Senate Race after losing to Marco Rubio.
For her part, Christine O’Donnell is pleased with the recent poll results.
“This poll is proof that the people of Delaware are rejecting big government solutions to all of our nation’s problems,” explained O’Donnell. “The Obama administration and Representative Castle believe that more spending is always the answer. The people of Delaware want fiscal responsibility from their government.”
“Unlike Mr. Castle, I believe that American small businesses are the engine of our economy, not the government. As a Senator, I do not promise to solve Delaware’s problems. I do promise to get the government out of the way so that entrepreneurs and job creators can do what they do best: Create jobs.”
“In Washington, I will fight for fiscal responsibility, a balanced budget, lower taxes and to limit the amount of government reach into the lives of Americans.”
