Tamar Kaprelian (Interscope) rocked Mercury Lounge last week with her unique brand of playful piano rock. The room was packed despite the lack of air conditioning (it had broken at around 5pm that day and did not appear to be returning anytime soon). Tamar was witty and charming even though she was performing in a sauna. Her single “New Day”, which you may recognize from “One Tree Hill” and promos for the show “Huge”, is a delightfully upbeat piano ditty, reminiscent of Sara Bareilles. She also did a wonderful duet of “A Whole New World” ( yes, from Aladdin) that had the whole room singing along.
Boyce Avenue (Universal Republic) proved themselves to be more than just a You Tube cover band, by performing a seemingly more rockin version of their debut album than the record “All We Have Left” suggests. The brothers (Daniel, Alejandro and Fabian) are true pros, not letting the heat get to them and playing a full energy filled set. Their single, “Every Breath” was just emotional live as the debut music video, which has almost a million views on YouTube. Check it out here. Fair warning, it’s a bit of a tear jerker.
All in all, it was a wonderful night of music – even with the sweat detox on the side. Almost more impressive than the musicianship was the dedication of the fans. Trust me – it was not a place anyone would like to hang out for a few hours, but it was still wall to wall fans singing and dancing to every note.
Keep an eye out for these two bands and see if they’re coming to your area. Next time the venue might not be so intimate.
