The Central NY Regional Market is all about food and fun. In addition to the year-round Saturday farmers market, from May to October the market adds a Thursday farmers market featuring fresh produce, plants, and local specialty food items. When the farmers close up their market stands each Thursday, classic cars used to roll into the parking lot for a meet-up.
In the summer, rock bands take the stage to rock ‘til after dark. The Market Block Party sets up the music stage in the parking area behind “E” shed. This week, Bret Michaels – last season’s The Celebrity Apprentice winner and Poison front man – was to be the featured headliner as a stop on his Roses & Thorns world tour.
Mid-morning today, Syracuse media outlets began reporting that Michaels had cancelled his August 5 Syracuse Market Block Party show. The concert cancellation has been paired with reports that Michaels will perform his 80s hit “Every Rose has its Thorn” live on tonight’s episode of NBC’s America’s Got Talent. However, Syracuse Food confirmed around noon Wednesday that Bret Michaels is actually in central New York. He’s scheduled to perform live tonight at 6pm at Tags Summer Stage in Big Flats, NY. Tags is about 95 miles, or two hours’ drive south of Syracuse.
Jesse Reib, operations manager at Tags and Cross-Rhodes Entertainment, confirmed to Syracuse Food by phone that Michaels was in the Tags parking lot getting ready for this evening’s show. Michaels taped his America’s Got Talent performance in Los Angeles earlier this week. The song will be broadcast as a live recording during tonight’s episode.
Reib provided photos of Michaels’s tour buses parked at Tags, and his stage crew setting up for the concert. According to Reib, tickets for tonight’s Bret Michaels concert with opening act Candlebox are still available. Tickets are $45 general admission and $50 reserved seating on the Tags Summer Stage website.
Michaels’s canceled Syracuse appearance left Dirty Little Secret, the Feroni Project and Silent Fury without a gig on the Market Block Party stage tomorrow night. Promoter Banks was reported to be rescheduling Michaels. As of 4pm Thursday evening, Michaels left Syracuse and will not perform at the CNY Regional Market on Thursday night.
The Market Block Party at the CNY Regional Market featured live music from 6pm to 10pm each Thursday in June and July and has concerts announced through August 19. Banks announced that tickets already purchased for Bret Michael’s August 5 show will be honored if his appearance is rescheduled. America’s Got Talent airs from 9pm to 10pm on local NBC affiliate station WSTM NBC3.
Meanwhile, Syracuse fans who want to see Michaels live can take a quick road trip to Tags in Big Flats and catch him tonight at 6pm.

David Garlow, Syracuse Local Music Examiner, along with the Post-Standard’s Bob Niedt and WSYR Channel 9 reported this afternoon that rocker Bret Michaels, whose tour buses spent most of the morning parked at the CNY Regional Market, has left Syracuse. Michaels will reschedule tonight’s canceled concert appearance on his own. In an interview with the Post-Standard published at about 4pm today, Michaels is quoted as saying that “the group will return to Syracuse for a concert he (Michaels) will stage on Nov. 26.” He blamed tonight’s concert cancellation on a dispute with the concert promoter, Mike Banks.
During the Post-Standard interview, Michaels advised people with tickets to today’s cancelled performance that he can’t honor those tickets at the November 26 show, and fans should contact Syracuse Market Block Party promoter Michael S. Banks. Michaels had an impromptu meet-and-greet with local fans while parked at the CNY Regional Market. After signing autographs and taking picutres with fans, Michaels gave interviews to local media before leaving Syracuse.
In interviews televised on WSYR Channel 9 during the day on August 5, Michaels noted that he played to a sold-out crowd on Wednesday night at Tags Summer Stage, Big Flats. The rock star also outlined from his point of view the issues that led to the cancellation of tonight’s performance in Syracuse. Stay tuned to Syracuse Local Bands examiner David Garlow for more information about Michaels’s November 26 Syracuse concert date, and check out the slide show to see updated pictures from Michaels’s performance at Tags Summer Stage, August 4.
————————————– UPDATE: Friday, August 6 —————————————————-
CNY Regional Market director Eugene Elemos informed local media on Friday morning that the August 19 Market Block Party concert, featuring the rock band Asia is canceled. This was to be the last concert in the summer concert series at the CNY Regional Market.
Elemos said he had informed local concert promoter Mike Banks that the market didn’t want additional trouble with last-minute concert cancellations. On Thursday morning, musician Bret Michaels pulled into the Regional Market with two tour buses. Instead of performing last night, Michaels left Syracuse in the afternoon without performing. The concert was canceled earlier in the day although Michaels told reporters he was never informed.
Elemos told local media that “the Regional Market was the last to hear about (the cancellation),” and that he was trying to reach Asia’s management to let them know that the August 19 concert is canceled.
