Although it may not fall under the dessert umbrella, bread making is an essential skill for any pastry or home chef. BREADBAR on West Third recently introduced “In the Making,” a novel culinary series which allows “edible art enthusiasts” to explore and experience different gastronomical realms. If you’re not familiar with BREADBAR, you should be — this artisanal bakery is one of LA’s destinations for hand-crafted bread and pastries. This month’s “In the Making,” will be held on Sunday, August 22 from 5-8PM and is focused on bringing homemade pita breads to your kitchen. Along with a workshop, a tantalizing three course prix-fixe dinner will be included!
Focusing on homemade pita breads, Maybrook will also demonstrate how to whip up specialty dips and spreads—including Baba Ganoush, Mouhammara, and Romesco—and assemble a balanced cheese, salumi, and olive platter to create a bread-centric, family-style dinner.
- A workshop featuring Jerry Maybrook, an artisanal baker who has spent the past 12 years researching and experimenting to make the perfect French Country loaf without artificial ingredients. Jerry Maybrook finds true pleasure in sharing his bread baking skills. He prides himself in using only basic ingredients—flour, water, salt, and natural yeast starter—to create sensational bread at home in the same style done for thousands of years. Passionate about sourdough starters and wild yeasts, Maybrook is dedicated to preserving the artisanal, all-natural methods of bread making at home, and teaches several workshops throughout Los Angeles every year to wean home bakers off of commercial yeast.
- A three-course prix-fixe dinner from the BREADBAR bistro menu, including homemade pita breads and spreads prepared during the workshop.
- The attention of head baker Juan Alvarado. He’ll be speaking about the artisanal break making process employed at the El Segundo Bakestudio. Alvarado will also be around to answer all of your breadcentric questions!
