Just how disgusting can this world get?
BP was no doubt hoping that the news of the apparent success in capping the leak in the gulf will overshadow the other news of the day. (Just like Toyota was hoping to slip it in yesterday’s news that they have ‘conclusively proven’ that all the runaways cars were just stupid drivers.)
It’s already been reported that the gulf oil spill didn’t have to happen – that BP was trying to do it on the cheap and use one preventer when two were recommended. Their disregard has already caused the destruction of thousands of square miles of the ecosystem, and the livelihoods of thousands of gulf area residents. Old news.
But now comes news that BP may have manipulated the British government into releasing a convicted terrorist in order to line the pockets of BP shareholders.
Remember the name Lockerbie? 22 years ago, Pan Am flight 103 was brought down by terrorists over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 270 people. Only one person was ever tried and convicted for that crime, a man named Abdelbaset Al Megrahi. He had been found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. But 8 years later, a Scottish judge released him after his doctor testified that the man was dying of prostate cancer and had less than 3 months to live, and he was returned to Libya to a hero’s welcome.
That was 11 months ago. The man’s still alive and healthy. Oops. Turns out the doctor, one Karol Sikora, was hired by the Libyan government to say that, and he’s now admitting that in fact al Megrahi has a decade or more to live.
But BP was right there in the thick of it. It now comes out that BP lobbied the British government (for “lobbied” read greased government palms) to release the man. Why? Guess. Here’s a clue: Libya = oil. The Daily Mail is reporting that BP was apparently trying to suck up to the Libyan government for an offshore drilling deal worth about $680 million. The company could eventually earn up to $20 billion. A former British Justice minister, Jack Straw, says there definitely was a quid pro quo; that BP was promised the oil deal in exchange for helping get al Megrahi released. –
Of course, the United states is furious that BP would work to affect the release of the killer of all those people in exchange for profits. Several senators are calling for an investigation. Hillary Clinton has pledged to look into it. There’s talk of banning BP from the U.S. oil market.
It’ll never happen. After all, BP can grease palms in the U.S. as easily as they can in Britain. This system is rotten to the core, and all the hand-wringing and posturing of Hillary Clinton, and the senators, and the State department, won’t do diddly.
Mark Twain said, “History has tried hard to teach us that we can’t have good government under politicians. When politics enter in, nothing resulting therefrom in the way of crimes and infamies is then incredible. It actually enables one to accept and believe the impossible…”
