Maladjusted Barnes and Noble arcade game social rejects and hardcore LAN party nerds can’t wait for Piranha 3D, but there’s a game with that name!
Piranha, without the 3D, is arguably one of the worst, or one of the most original – depending on how you look at it, Pac-Man maze game clones ever invented. With the amazing success of Namco’s Pac-Man in the 80s came several sequels and spinoffs. However, some desperate companies wanted to cash in on the Pac-Man craze, so they came out with their own Pac-Man knock-offs in the 80s. Ah … the 80s … what a decade! One such ROM hack was the odd Pac-Man rip-off Piranha, a game that can only be described as a Pac-Man maze game, but without the maze and without the ghosts. You’ve got a skinny piranha as the pellet-gobbling character instead of the yellow and round pizza-pie-shaped character we all know and love. The piranha must eat pellets in a maze bereft of any walls; the player’s character only has a black open space devoid of any boundaries and nowhere to hide. The screen is littered with colorful pellets everywhere, and the player must maneuver the ravenous fish character, zigzagging and making sharp turns in a deep black ocean inhabited by hungry squid. Without walls, maneuvering becomes extremely difficult in the game. Avoiding the hungry squid is virtually impossible in such an open and unencumbered virtual environment; eventually, the tentacled predators surround the helpless toothy fish into a corner where there is no escape. Most players are eaten before they are able to finish the first level of the game. It is that challenging! All in all, Piranha is a strange little Pac-Man hack that is hated by some, loved by others and forgotten by many. Piranha the old 80s arcade game comes to mind for one very obvious reason. Can you guess why?

This is the films plot according to Wikipedia: “Each year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for the annual Spring Break. But then, a sudden underwater earthquake opens an underwater chasm, releasing an enormous swarm of ancient piranha that has been dormant for thousands of years, now with a taste for human flesh. This year, there’s something more to worry about than the usual hangovers and complaints from locals; a new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria.”
