Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay staff came together on Tuesday to raise funds for United Way of Central Florida. Approximately 16 staff members including President and CEO Stephen Koch, participated in this year’s event which consisted of a display of cupcake decorating talents. The decorated cupcakes were to be auctioned rendering additional proceeds for the campaign.
The judges Craig Spurlock, member of the Community Resource Board, Kelly Spurlock, former employee and Professional Baker and Maria Martinez, Professional Life Coach and member of the community had the difficult task to choose a winner for three categories: Creativity, Use of Color and Overall Appearance. A fourth category was added to distinguish team spirit.
The event also included a presentation by Margaret Parry, from Peace River Center who shared with the audience how with the support of United Way, Peace River Center is able to provide services through their Domestic Violence Shelter for women and children. Ms. Parry noted the importance of these services as she shared statistics reflecting that every 9 seconds a woman is abused. Other services include counseling at the Rape Recovery Resource Center and the Crisis Line, which is open 24/7.
The artistic staff displayed their cupcake decorating skills but at the end the winners were Most Creative: Carrie; Best use of color: Kathleen; Overall Appearance: Stacy and finally, Mr. Koch received the “Best Spirit” award.
Donna Orr, Directory of Partnership Development and Recruitment, stated that “one of the most important things that United Way provides us, in addition to the financial support, is the connection to all of the other resources available in our area so that if we are unable to provide a service to someone in need, we have access to one that can. The community benefits from the United Way’s commitment to caring for them.” Mrs. Orr organized and led this year’s fund raising events.
